Sand Springs quarterback Johnny Deaton has received medical clearance to return to practice on Tuesday, less than a month after undergoing surgery for a broken collarbone.

Deaton, an Oklahoma State commit, was the Tulsa World's top-ranked area high school player entering the season. He suffered a broken collarbone in the season opener on Sept. 4 at Enid and had surgery the following week.

"It'll be great to start throwing again," Deaton said Monday night, as first reported on tulsaworld.com. "My doctor told me he was surprised at how fast that I've healed."

Deaton does not know when or if he will return to play this season. Sand Springs (3-2), battling for a playoff spot with five regular-season games left, plays at Muskogee on Friday after losing to Bartlesville last week.

"We'll just have to see how it goes in practice," Deaton said.

Sand Springs coach Dustin Kinard will be glad to see Deaton return to practice.

"This definitely shows what kind of competitor he is," Kinard said. "He wants to do whatever will help the team and is hoping it will lift their morale even if he doesn't play. He's a great kid."

Deaton will not play unless he is ready. Please do not imply otherwise.

I am glad he's healthy again. The kid has great potential.

With a career ahead of him waiting at Stillwater (OSU), he and his family along with the coaches need to be safe. I say keep him on the bench unless Gundy pulls his scholarship offer. I doubt that will happen..... Plus, Gundy can get Terrance Dixon the Sandites RB if he plays his cards right.

Good for him, he is a great athlete and after meeting him last week found him to be an awesome kid. Pretty classy move letting him be the lone captain for halftime last week at SS homecoming. It is great to see a true D-1 athlete stay in his hometown and not head to "greener pastures" and promises of free electricity and what-not. BTW crippled shark, told ya bout them bruins, they are for real!

Should be the SS coaching staff and the young man's decision, not Gundy's.

Agree. Deaton is a true competitor and it must be killing him watching the Sandites get beat by teams they beat last year.. easily.. like Bartlesville. No offense conserv-o-king, but Deaton did put up big numbers against them last year. The Bruins were definitely the better team last Friday night, but I can't help but wonder what the outcome would have been with Deaton at the helm. Guess we'll never know. The BV foootball program has really continued to improve with Ron Smith as the coach - which is nice to see. They used to be the whipping boys of 6a, so good to see that happening for them.
