BROKEN ARROW — Junior quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen produced the best performance of his high school career at a critical time for the Jenks Trojans.

After a turbulent week that included penalties to the Jenks football program and head coach Allan Trimble’s indefinite suspension, the top-ranked Trojans faced No. 3 Broken Arrow in a showdown to keep a share of the District 6A-3 lead with Bartlesville.

Kollmorgen responded with a near-perfect game as he completed 18-of-24 passes for a career-high 354 passing yards and four TDs to lead the Trojans to a 42-24 victory over the Tigers on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

“I think it was my best game,” said Kollmorgen, who has been the Trojans’ starting QB since Week 7 last year. “Our receivers and O-line did a great job. Our coaches did a great job of putting a game plan together. We knew what they (Tigers) were going to do.”

Kollmorgen had an opportunity to pass more than he usually does in the Trojans’ balanced attack.

“I was looking forward to that,” Kollmorgen said.

Zack Langer also had a big game for Jenks with 28 carries for 118 yards and he scored three TDs. Langer had most of the Trojans’ rushing workload because tailback Cory Jones was sidelined with an injury suffered last week against Sapulpa.

“Zack — what a workhorse,” Jenks interim coach Loren Montgomery said. ”He’s a great athlete and tough kid. He’s everything you want out of a football player.”

It was close for a half before Kollmorgen and the Trojans (6-0, 3-0) broke the game open with scoring drives in the last minute of the first half and opening minute of the second half.

After Broken Arrow’s Carl Salazar kicked a 36-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 17-14 lead, Jenks ran its two-minute offense to perfection at the end of the first half.

Jacob Bertelli’s 39-yard pass moved the Trojans to the Tiger 21. Two plays later, Kollmorgen scrambled for 11 to the 9. On the next play, Kollmorgen fired an inside pass to Brandon Kitchens, who eluded one defender and bounced off another en route to a touchdown with 19 seconds left to give Jenks a 21-17 lead.

The Trojans needed just 31 seconds to score in the second half. Kollmorgen passed 64 yards to Steven Carpenter to set up Langer’s 2-yard touchdown run.

“That was a turning point,” Montgomery said.

Later in the quarter, Chris Green caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from Kollmorgen.

In the fourth quarter, Langer scored from the 1 on the play after John Mark Elliott’s fumble recovery as Jenks increased its lead to 42-17.

“They outplayed us,” Broken Arrow coach Ron Lancaster said. “We didn’t come to play.”

Jenks drove 80 yards in eight plays on its first possession. Kollmorgen capped the drive with a 3-yard scoring pass to Tyler Ott. Those were the only yards on the drive that were not gained by Langer, who rushed 62 yards and had a 15-yard reception.

Broken Arrow (4-2, 2-1) countered immediately with a six-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Archie Bradley’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Dakota Davis. A key play on the drive was Ronnie Price’s 22-yard reverse that included an additional 15 yards for a face-mask penalty.

The Trojans then rolled 73 yards in seven plays, ignited by Kollmorgen’s 17-yard pass to Ott. Kollmorgen connected with Bertelli for a 39-yard gain to set up Langer’s 5-yard touchdown catch on a swing pass with tackle Jake Alexander leading the way with a block in the left flat.

Broken Arrow, however, tied the game at 14 with 15 seconds left in the first quarter on Steven Hopper’s 7-yard touchdown run to finish off a six-play, 69-yard drive.

The second quarter was scoreless until Carl Salazar’s 36-yard field goal gave Broken Arrow a 17-14 lead with 1:39 remaining, Jenks’ David Lore kept the Tigers from having a chance to score a touchdown as he tackled Bradley for no gain when it appeared the quarterback was on his way to converting a 3rd-and-5. Lore’s play enabled the Trojans to take the lead before intermission and they were never threatened again.
