PERKINS — Senior quarterback Stephen Rouse was nearly perfect in the air in a prolific first half as Cascia Hall ran its winning streak to 34 straight games with a 49-20 victory over Perkins-Tryon on Thursday night.

Class 3A No. 1 Cascia, the two-time defending state champion, is now 6-0 on the year and 4-0 in District 3A-3.

Rouse hit 15-of-17 passes in the first half for 259 yards and four touchdowns as Cascia bolted to a 35-7 halftime lead.

Rouse’s preferred target, Cascia receiver A.Z. Moyer, caught four touchdown passes on the night. He had five receptions for 126 yards.

Rouse played most of the third quarter but threw only once after intermission.

Overshadowed by the aerial fireworks was a 144-yard rushing effort by Cascia tailback Excetral Caldwell. Caldwell was not in the lineup on the game’s first series but was superb after getting on the field. He averaged 9 yards on his 16 carries and scored on runs of 2 and 25 yards.

Cascia was overwhelming in the opening quarter as the Commandos opened up a 14-0 lead. Cascia had nine first downs and 189 total yards, 125 in the air, in the period.

Meanwhile, the Cascia defense yielded only 5 yards, no first downs, and came up with two interceptions.

Moyer scored Cascia’s final four touchdowns in the first half on plays that covered 9, 10, 43, and 40 yards. The two long gainers came in the final three minutes of the second quarter and broke the game open.

Perkins (4-3, 2-2) got hard running from several backs throughout the game, and the Demons ended with 216 yards on the ground. Senior Matt Hill was the leader with 70 yards on 13 carries and a TD.
