Running to set up the pass, passing to set up the run, everything worked for Bartlesville as its balanced offensive attack dominated Memorial en route to a 54-21 win at LaFortune Stadium on Friday night.

The Bruins had 201 yards (96 passing, 105 rushing) of offense in the first quarter, jumping out to a 27-0 lead. Their dominance continued in the second quarter as quarterback Kirby Schoenthaler finished the half 13 of 22 for 247 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Bruins to a 41-7 lead at the intermission.

“The offensive line did a great job of protecting, as they do every week. This kid right here, number 19 (Trevor Moll), number 7 (Mike Thompson), 15 (Garrett Powell), they stepped up and made big plays for me,” Schoenthaler said. “The receivers are making great plays on the ball.”

Bartlesville improved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in District 6A-3.

Memorial’s lone score in the half came on a 94-yard Derrick Sanders touchdown run with 1:13 left in the second quarter.

Sanders’ run more than doubled the 43 yards of offense the Chargers had accumulated to that point in the half.

“When you put our twos in there against their ones, they are going to have long runs, and they busted one off on us,” Bartlesville coach Ron Smith said. “That’s why our twos are twos.”

The Bruins’ blowout win came after their first loss of the season last week against Jenks, but they didn’t feel they had anything to prove in this game.

“There’s no vindication for losing to Jenks, everyone has lost to them,” Smith said. “We had to be concerned about getting better ourselves. We got better this week.”

Memorial, which will move down to Class 5A next year, fell to 2-7 on the season. Despite its offense rallying late for two touchdowns, the defense struggled all game, giving up 510 yards.

“We just gotta keep pushing forward and making sure we are doing the right thing,” Memorial coach Tony Daniels said. “Trying to make sure these kids also understand 'never give up,’ that’s the mentality I’m trying to keep up with these kids, that way we can also start preparing for next year when we do drop down to 5A.”
