Sand Springs escapes in wild win over Sapulpa

In a wild game that featured 11 lead changes, nearly 1,000 yards of offense and three ties, it was only fitting that Friday's Sand Springs-Sapulpa game wasn't decided until the very end.

On the game's final play, 4 yards stood between a Sapulpa touchdown and victory. But, a screen pass was completed for no gain and Sand Springs escaped with a 49-45 win at Collins Stadium, overshadowing a 263-yard rushing performance by Sapulpa's Bryce Ferrell.

Sandite senior quarterback Johnny Deaton and senior tailback Terrance Dixon connected for 17 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:35 remaining.

"It was designed for our running back (Dixon)," Deaton said of his third touchdown throw of the night, which was a scoring strike down the middle with Dixon streaking wide open into the end zone.

"(Sapulpa) was bringing their safeties over to stop the stacks on our wide receivers, and it just left (Dixon) up the middle one-on-one."

Sapulpa's ensuing drive reached Sand Springs' 5-yard line, but three consecutive passes by Michael Glisson gained only 1 yard, and the Chieftains (1-8, 1-5 District 6A-3) failed to beat their archrival for the fourth straight season.

"I'm 3-0 against (Sapulpa)," said Sand Springs coach Dustin Kinard, whose team improved to 3-3 in District 6A-3 and 5-4 overall.

"You've got to win some ugly, and that might have been the ugliest high school football game from the defensive side of the ball."

Dixon rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns to go along with his game-winning TD catch.

Deaton passed for 131 yards and three TDs and added 137 on 21 carries on the ground.

"We're fired up; we beat the rival," Kinard said. "But man, we made a stop when we had to. The only time we stopped them all night was when we had to."

Ferrell entered the game with 801 rushing yards and the junior tailback broke the 1,000-yard rushing mark in the first half. He also caught four passes for 88 yards and a score.

"That was a great win for us," Deaton said. "I'm just glad we pulled it off."

With the win, Sand Springs elevated itself into fourth place in District 6A-3 with Claremore losing to Broken Arrow (24-0) and Muskogee getting routed at Jenks (58-15).

The Sandites host Jenks next Friday in the final week of the regular season.

Ferrell is an underreported standout. We should have heard a lot more about him this year. Dixon and Deaton are fine athletes, don't get me wrong; but Ferrell ran for more than the 2 of them combined.

6A is a very tough division for anyone to play in, because of the few oversized freaks named Broken Arrow, Union, and Jenks. When will they see that a gold ball isn't the greater trophy; the kids are. A team can only put 11 guys on the field. Its time to split up the freaks into 3 smaller schools each, and get more opportunities open to kids who can all develop into college prospects.
When will it happen?... When school boards put kids first. There are kids standing on sidelines that are good enough to get athletic scholarships, but they won't because no one will ever see them play at the big freak schools.

Page and Sapulpa are 2 community schools that can hold their heads high.

Wow, that sounds like a crazy game, and yeah, Ferrell must be shifty to get 263 yards.

Some more Naifehs in Sapulpa? I remember there are quite a few back in the day in both Sapulpa and Sand Springs...
