Dutch drill Casady on Sexton's 269 yards, 3 touchdowns

Of all the great running backs around the state, there might be one that has flown under the radar. But, after Friday night's performance, he may start to get a little more recognition.

Kwame Sexton, a junior from Holland Hall, exploded for 269 rushing yards on just 23 carries, and also added three touchdowns. Sexton led the way for a convincing 35-12 crushing over OKC Casady in a key Southwest Preparatory Conference matchup on senior night at Charles H. Brown field.

"I gotta give it all up to my offensive line," said Sexton, who was content to give himself little consideration for a big night. "They did everything, and I just finished the job."

The most impressive aspect of Sexton's huge numbers was the fact that 232 of those yards were amassed after halftime. The Cyclones limited Sexton to only 37 yards the opening half. But, it was the speedy running back who took over after intermission, igniting the offense. Sexton had touchdown runs of 2, 64, and 27 yards, all coming in the final quarter, that blew a game wide open in which Holland Hall was clinging to a two-point lead before his outburst.

"He's a very special kid, a very talented young man," said Dutch head coach Tag Gross.

It was a bittersweet victory for the Dutch, however, as they needed a win by Houston St. John's over Houston Kinkaid, coupled with a win of their own, to advance to the conference championship game next week. Kinkaid won 14-13 in the final minutes to wrap up its position in the title game.

Gross talked of how he understood that his team could not control what happened between the two Houston schools. "But we can control what happens here," he said. "And the seniors had a chance to finish this thing right."

Neither Sexton nor the Holland Hall offense was moving the ball efficiently in the first quarter. Casady controlled much of the opening period, and took an early lead just more than six minutes into action.

Casady running back Bentley Williams, who finished as a bright spot on the Casady offense, scored from 22 yards out on an option pitch around the right edge to stake the Cyclones to a 6-0 lead. Bentley ended his night with 78 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Holland Hall responded, but it took more than a quarter of play to do so. With 3:27 left in the second quarter, Dutch senior quarterback Jay Swab connected with Nick White for 33 yards and a score. Swab found White over the middle around the 10, and the receiver did the rest, breaking away from a defender and scooting into the end zone for a 7-6 Dutch lead.

The score remained that way until halftime, but didn't last much longer than that. Casady regained the lead 12 seconds into the second half with a 65-yard kickoff return by Cale Shivers to regain the lead, 12-7. The return was the best moment for Shivers, who also played quarterback for the Cyclones.

Shivers was continuously pressured by a relentless Dutch defense that allowed the one score in the first. Shivers finished 5-of-16 passing with 26 yards and an interception, by Sexton.

After the teams swapped possessions, the Dutch took the lead and control of the game with 5:10 left in the third. Swab tossed a touchdown pass, this time finding a wide-open Jake Freudenrich in the middle of the end zone from 15 yards out to put Holland Hall up 14-12. Swab completed 11-of-15 passes for 141 yards and two scores.

Then, it was Sexton's time to take over. He had a 2-yard leap over the line for a touchdown and a 21-12 advantage. Then he added a 64-yard burst around the left untouched for a 16-point advantage. He closed with a 27-yard dash through a gaping hole up the middle.

"I just do what I gotta do for my teammates," said Sexton with a smile. "And, I love my teammates."
