Mustangs hold off Titans

Oologah barely survived a late charge from McLain to get the 21-20 victory in a District 4A-3 matchup at Melvin Driver Stadium on Friday.

"McLain gave us a great high school football game," said Oologah coach Brandon Craig. "They got some big plays and really turned the momentum around on us."

Oologah (6-3, 5-1 in 4A-3) jumped out to 21-0 lead at halftime, but McLain (3-6, 1-5) came out inspired in the second half. After receiving the opening kickoff, the Titans drove inside the 5-yard line before fumbling.

With less than a minute remaining in the third quarter, McLain's Darren Cotton intercepted a pass and returned it 89 yards for a touchdown.

Cotton and Demonte Harris each had a touchdown reception in the fourth quarter, but McLain was unable to convert its first two-point conversion, and that turned out to be the difference in the game.

Oologah was led by Class 4A's leading rusher.

Josh Collier ran for 125 yards on 29 carries and scored a touchdown.

"He's the guy we go to in crunch time," said Craig. "When we need a big play, we know who to go to."

Oologah ran a quick-paced offense that mainly focused on the ground game.

Five Oologah ballcarriers combined for 50 carries and 219 yards.

"McLain did a great job of keeping guys in the box and stacking up our running plays," said Craig.

Quarterback Alec Brunson also chipped in for Oologah, throwing for 120 yards and two TDs.

McLain was led by QB BeAndre Willis, who went 9-for-14 for 163 yards and two TD passes. He also ran for 98 yards.

In addition to his interception return, Cotton also caught eight passes for 130 yards and a touchdown.
