No. 2 Redskins clinch district in rout

If the last three weeks are any indication, second-ranked Union should have a well-rested squad with the Class 6A playoffs just around the corner.

After seeing just one half of action in each of the last two weeks, most of the Redskins' offensive and defensive units didn't even complete the first quarter in Union's 79-0 blowout of District 6A-4 foe OKC Grant on Friday night at Union Tuttle Stadium.

Senior running back Monte Hedgepeth helped celebrate Union's annual Senior Night festivities with three touchdown runs during a 70-point first half for the Redskins (8-1, 6-0).

The big victory, Union's seventh straight, not only clinched a 12th consecutive district title for the defending state champions but it extended Union's district winning streak to 84 games.

"I thought we came out and executed well in all phases tonight," Union head coach Kirk Fridrich said. "I was pleased with how we handled the situation (one-sided game) and remained sharp."

Hedgepeth opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest with a 35-yard run as Union raced to a 42-0 edge after one quarter.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder added another 35-yard scoring burst, then tallied from 17 yards out in a one-minute span of the second quarter on his way to a game-high 121 yards on just eight carries.

"There are a lot of people who would like to have him. He's a solid tailback," Fridrich said of Hedgepeth.

Starting quarterback Chase Boyce tossed TD passes to Kale Pearson and Christian Hood in the opening six minutes before exiting the game late in the first quarter.

His replacement, Luke Pettrey, then hooked up with John Carradini on a 76-yard scoring pass in the final minute of the opening period.

Jarred Davis, Stephen Parrish and Roy Tillis tallied touchdown runs for Union, which rushed for 278 yards on only 26 carries.

The Redskins' defense and special teams also scored points. Linebacker Bobby Lind recovered a Generals fumble in the end zone and Milus Clarke returned a punt 52 yards for a touchdown.

The shutout was the seventh of the year for Grant (1-8, 0-6), which has yet to score a point in district play this year.

Kicker Cole Way added PAT kicks after the Redskins' first nine TDs. His final conversion broke the school single-game mark for PATs that had been established by his brother, Tress, in 2006.

Union ends district play with its regular-season finale next week at Enid.

You sure those stats aren't from the Oregon-Boise game? Ugly.
