Bruins cruise to win
Bartlesville bounces back from loss to Jenks.

Kirby Schoenthaler (8) threw for 247 yards in the first half as Bartlesville jumped out to a 41-7 lead against Blaine Verner (left) and Memorial. The Bruins won 54-21 to improve to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in district play. TOM GILBERT/Tulsa World

Running to set up the pass, passing to set up the run, everything worked for Bartlesville as its balanced offensive attack dominated Memorial en route to a 54-21 win at LaFortune Stadium on Friday night.

The Bruins had 201 yards (96 passing, 105 rushing) of offense in the first quarter, jumping out to a 27-0 lead. Their dominance continued in the second quarter as quarterback Kirby Schoenthaler finished the half 13 of 22 for 247 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Bruins to a 41-7 lead at the intermission.

"The offensive line did a great job of protecting, as they do every week. This kid right here, number 19 (Trevor Moll), number 7 (Mike Thompson), 15 (Garrett Powell), they stepped up and made big plays for me," Schoenthaler said. "The receivers are making great plays on the ball."

Bartlesville improved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in District 6A-3.

Memorial's lone score in the half came on a 94-yard Derrick Sanders touchdown run with 1:13 left in the second quarter.

Sanders' run more than doubled the 43 yards of offense the Chargers had accumulated to that point in the half.

"When you put our twos in there against their ones, they are going to have long runs, and they busted one off on us," Bartlesville coach Ron Smith said. "That's why our twos are twos."

The Bruins' blowout win came after their first loss of the season last week against Jenks, but they didn't feel they had anything to prove in this game.

"There's no vindication for losing to Jenks, everyone has lost to them," Smith said. "We had to be concerned about getting better ourselves. We got better this week"

Memorial, which will move down to Class 5A next year, fell to 2-7 on the season. Despite its offense rallying late for two touchdowns, the defense struggled all game, giving up 510 yards.

"We just gotta keep pushing forward and making sure we are doing the right thing," Memorial coach Tony Daniels said. "Trying to make sure these kids also understand 'never give up,' that's the mentality I'm trying to keep up with these kids, that way we can also start preparing for next year when we do drop down to 5A."

“When you put our twos in there against their ones, they are going to have long runs, and they busted one off on us,” Bartlesville coach Ron Smith said. “That’s why our twos are twos.”

Wow. Really? Had to use the old "oh that was our second string" excuse? How arrogant is this dude? Didn't you just win 54-21? You felt the need to make that comment in order to somehow EXPLAIN how the other team was able to make a big play against your UNBELIEVABLY TALENTED AND WELL COACHED MACHINE OF A FOOTBALL TEAM. Seriously dude, get over yourself.

Steve, you need to get over yourself. When the coach was asked to explain the defensive breakdown on the play that nearly tripled Memorial's offensive output for the half, how else would you explain it? You probably, "duh, i dunno".

And also, you totally missed the point that the #2s were playing in the first half. Other coaches in the area have had their #1s throwing downfield with a 69-0 lead just before halftime. But then karma caught up with that d-weed.

He could have just said that his kids were out of position. He could have said that his kids just didn't make the play when they had the opportunity. Instead, he chose to point out the fact that it was his 2's versus Memorial's 1's.

Any decent person knows that Memorial is out-manned in 6A. It really isn't anything that anyone else hasn't done this year with Memorial, so to see him beat his chest like that is laughable. It's like the Lakers versus the Clippers, they are expected to win. Some people choose to be classy and others choose to be jerks. This guy was a jerk. Plain and simple.

Nonetheless, I'm excited to see my alma mater move down to 5A. We've taken a beating from these 6A schools for long enough. Keep fighting Chargers. Lay the groundwork for a good year next year in 5A.

could have, would have, should have.
They were not out manned against Bartlesville.
Your talking like the jerk, making excuses, they lost plain and simple.
Smith does not dance around, he tells it like it is.

A jerk would have left his 1's in until 4th quarter. A jerk would have thrown downfield all game long. A jerk would complain about a coach answering a dumb question.

LeftyTulsan-The Bartlesville Bruins have not been traditional world-beaters in football. When we travel to an away game, it is usually Homecoming for the other school. This is the FIRST WINNING SEASON since the 1980's. Success for BHS has been finishing 5-5 with games against 4A and 5A on the schedule for one of those.

The second stringers were playing in the first half. Coach Smith is an outstanding man; he was likely asked the question by the reporter while running off the field to meet the players at halftime. It was not a prepared speech.
