Central closes in on playoff berth
Cobbs' big night on offense, defense help Braves to win.

Correction: A Saturday Tulsa World Sports story incorrectly stated that Central High School has clinched a football playoff berth. Central can clinch a playoff berth this week with a win or an Ada loss. This story has been corrected.

Not even the flu can slow down Demarco Cobbs.

Cobbs had 129 yards rushing, six tackles and a sack to lead the Central Braves closer to a playoff berth with an 18-7 win over the Coweta Tigers.

In his first game since a switched verbal commitment from Tennessee to Texas on Thursday, Cobbs had little trouble ripping through the Tiger defense. He ran for a 51-yard score on the Braves' third play of the game.

But sickness hobbled the future Longhorn after the touchdown run Friday.

"After I scored that first touchdown I had a hard time breathing," Cobbs said. "I thought I was going to throw up. I choked it down, though."

Central improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in District 5A-4. Coweta looked like it had a chance to counter on its next possession, driving 65 yards to get inside the Central 5-yard line.

But the Braves recovered a Tigers fumble to stop the drive. Central linebacker Deion Fipps intercepted two Coweta passes in the second quarter and the Braves tacked on two more touchdowns to seal the win.

Cobbs sported a Longhorns lanyard after the game. The commitment switch, he said, didn't come lightly.

"Texas is the school I've always cheered for," Cobbs said. "Tennessee was great and I would have been happy there, I know, but Texas is good, too, because it's close to home. My friends and family can see me play in Stillwater."

Cobbs is expected to make a full-time move to defense in college.

The Central star prefers offense, but the chance to make plays like his first career sack against Coweta makes defense appealing too.

"That felt good," Cobbs said with a laugh. "I like offense a little more, but I can do both sides of the ball."

Cobbs admits the decision to switch commitments was a weight on his mind in the last few weeks. He said the decision probably even affected his play.

"I was a little stressed out about it," Cobbs said. "It was on my mind the last two weeks, if I made the right decision for me, but it's behind me now."

Hopefully Cobbs represents the state of Oklahoma better than Pickryl did down there in Austin.
