SHATTUCK — Quarterback Connor Babcock rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries as Shattuck set a national 8-man high school football record with its 91st straight win, beating Goodwell 40-14 on Friday.

Brent Starbuck added 98 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 14 carries for Class C No. 1 Shattuck (9-0), which broke the 8-man national record set by longtime Oklahoma power Morrison, which won 90 straight games from 1989 to 1995 and once held the overall national record for consecutive wins.

After the game, the current team celebrated with their predecessors who played for the Indians during the streak and the scoreboard at Indian Field was changed to read "91-0."

Past and present players received freshly printed T-shirts commemorating the occasion.

"We kept plugging away and we did it," Shattuck coach Troy Bullard said. "I'm just going to soak it in. I can't say words that express it. It's meaningful for the town of Shattuck."

Shattuck's last loss came in the 2002 Class C semifinals, when the Indians fell to Pond Creek-Hunter.

Shattuck's winning streak is No. 3 on the overall national list, behind De La Salle of Concord, Calif., which won 151 in a row from 1992 through 2003, and Independence of Charlotte, N.C., which won 109 straight games from 2000 to 2007. After Morrison, an 89-game streak by South Panola of Batesville, Miss., from 2003 to 2008 rounds out the top five. De La Salle, Independence and South Panola all play traditional 11-man football.

Only one of Shattuck's 91 straight wins has been decided by fewer than 10 points, as the Indians won 22-14 at Forgan in 2003, the streak's first year.

The Indians have posted 30 shutouts during their streak, which has included six state titles.

"That's what records are about, to be broken," said Dennis Casey, who was Morrison's coach for much of its streak. "You've got to give (Shattuck) credit. They've had their share of opportunities to get beat but they rose above it."

Despite the northwestern Oklahoma town's proximity to Texas — which is seven miles to the west — all of Shattuck's wins in the streak have come against in-state competition, because smaller Texas schools play 6-man football instead of the 8-man variety.

More than 1,500 people crowded into the stands and lined the field on Friday, including Lt. Gov. Jari Askins and a handful of members from the Oklahoma House and Senate, who presented the players and coaches with commendations.

Shattuck scored on all five of its first-half possessions and led 34-0 at halftime. Starbuck scored on runs on 1, 9 and 2 yards while Babcock's two scoring runs both covered 11 yards.

Babcock — the Indians' third-string quarterback, playing because of injuries to other players — added a 15-yard touchdown run on the second play after halftime. He also completed both his pass attempts, for 53 yards.

"I never even really thought about the record until a couple weeks ago," Starbuck said. "I can't imagine a better way to go out on senior night. I'm just speechless."

Goodwell (2-7) suited up only 12 players. Trey Beck led the Eagles, rushing for 157 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

Shattuck will close the regular season next Friday at Buffalo. The Indians' streak could reach 96 games if they finish undefeated again this year.

"We've got to keep practicing hard," Starbuck said. "It starts again Monday. We've got to keep going."
