Verdigris rallies at Pawhuska

Correction: A Saturday Tulsa World Sports story incorrectly identified the player who caught the game-winning touchdown pass for Verdigris High School against Pawhuska. Freshman fullback Tanner Smith caught an 11-yard touchdown pass with 18 seconds left for a 10-7 win Friday night. This story has been corrected.

Verdigris completed only one pass in its game Friday night at Pawhuska.

It was all the Cardinals needed.

Senior quarterback Kevin Stout connected with fullback Tanner Smith for an 11-yard touchdown with 18 seconds left to give the Class 2A No. 10 Verdigris a 10-7 victory Friday night.

The Cardinals chewed up 60 yards and five-plus minutes off the clock on the winning possession. Other than the scoring play, Verdigris used its running game to methodically move down the field.

"Our offensive line stepped up and controlled the line of scrimmage. They knew they could do it," said Verdigris coach Dan Nickles, whose team improved to 7-2 (5-1 in District 2A-7) and clinched a first-round home playoff game.

Stout kept the winning drive going with a 1-yard quarterback sneak on a fourth-and-1 play.

All the scoring took place in the final quarter.

Tyler Hanslovan booted a 33-yard field goal to give Verdigris a 3-0 lead. Pawhuska (7-2, 4-2) responded with Kyle Culver's 21-yard touchdown pass to Riley Javellas with just under six minutes remaining.

Knowing that a home playoff game was at stake for the winner, the Cardinals countered with their game-winning drive.

"We both knew we were playing for second place in the district," Nickles said. "That was the big thing we talked to our team all week. They knew the importance of having a home playoff game and what it would mean for our program."

Wagoner upsets Sallisaw

Highlights: Strong special teams play and the performance of quarterback Prince McJunkins lifted Wagoner to a 35-16 upset victory at Class 4A No. 2 Sallisaw.

Robinson opened the scoring with a 56-yard punt return for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Wagoner put the game away with McJunkins' 48-yard touchdown run and Kevin Peterson recovering a blocked punt in the end zone for a TD.

Notes: Sallisaw (8-1, 5-1) got a pair of touchdown runs from Jeromy Davenport.

Notes: Metro's J.D. Weidman had 102 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Collinsville closes out Vinita

Highlights: Shane Douglas accounted for both his team's touchdowns as Collinsville clinched a Class 4A playoff berth with a 14-12 win at Vinita.

Keys: Douglas, who had a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, gave the Cardinals (6-3, 4-2 District 4A-3) a 14-6 fourth-quarter lead with a 21-yard scoring pass to Joe Keith.

In your story on the Verdigris / Pawhuska game, it was freshman fullback TANNER Smith that caught the TD pass with 18 seconds left ..... not safety Drew Smith.
