Comets roll up Wardogs
Bishop Kelley is perfect in regular season for the first time since 1980.

MIAMI — Class 5A top-ranked Bishop Kelley completed its first unbeaten regular season since 1980 with a 44-7 victory over Miami on Friday night.

The game was expected to be essentially a tune-up for the playoffs for the potent Comets (10-0, 7-0 District 5A-3). Kelley roared to a 37-0 lead at intermission, causing the second half to be played with a continuously running clock.

As a result, Kelley did not have an offensive play in the third period and snapped the ball only nine times, just three times by its first-team offense, after intermission.

Kelley still rolled up 208 yards on the ground, averaging nearly 7 yards on its 31 running plays, and 174 in the air. More than half of the passing yards was the result of a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Jack Cameron to split end Joe Dowdell, who was well behind the secondary on both plays.

A red-zone fumble ruined a potential scoring drive by the Comets on the game's first possession, but Kelley quickly forced a punt and regained possession at the Miami 25. Workhorse tailback Stephen Sherwood capped the mini-drive with the first of his two touchdowns, a 10-yard run with 4:31 left in the first quarter.

The first Cameron-to-Dowdell touchdown bomb, covering 52 yards, came on Kelley's next possession and gave the Comets a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Kelley defense took complete charge in the second quarter, setting up touchdowns with an interception by Jake O'Brien and a blocked punt by Jack Clark. The defense put two points on the scoreboard themselves when Miami punter Casey Millard was chased out of the end zone.

The two touchdowns set up by the defense covered a total of 25 yards. The Comets got a third touchdown in the period on a 48-yard drive after the safety, but another apparent score was negated by a holding call. That drive ended in a missed field goal.

Miami scored via a 66-yard drive on the opening possession of the third quarter. All 12 plays on the march were passes. Quarterback Casey Carson hit wide receiver Trey Flick with a 25-yard TD pass with 3:17 left in the period.

Sherwood finished with 66 yards on 12 carries. He carried only five times after the first quarter.

Backup tailback Alex Maguire rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns on just six first-half carries.

Cameron was efficient in the air, going 10-fo-14.

He also ran for 23 yards on four carries.

Miami ended at 2-5 in district play and 2-8 overall.

won't get past Carl albert. but a good season anyway. will finish at 11-1.
