2008 champion

Booker T. Washington (5-5): The No. 2 Hornets won't be in the playoffs after forfeiting three wins due to using ineligible players. As a result, the 5A race for the gold ball is wide open.

Team to beat

Bishop Kelley (10-0): The top-ranked Comets rate as the slight favorite after defeating Booker T. Washington in Week 4. The Comets have a balanced attack led by quarterback Jack Cameron, who has one of 5A's top receivers, Joe Dowdell. Kelley also has a tenacious defense that allows only 9.2 points. The only question mark about the Comets is they have not had much playoff success in this decade.

Sleeper

East Central (9-1) is a perennial state title contender, but the Cardinals have not been talked about as much this year as being a championship threat because they don't have any major college prospects. The Cardinals, however, always seem to come up with a big play when needed and are motivated by a first-round loss last year after five straight trips to the semifinals.

Players to watch

Demarco Cobbs, Central: State's top major college recruit has rushed for 1,319 yards and scored 20 TDs as a quarterback and also has become a force on defense. He's also a dangerous kick returner.

Justin Fogle, Hale: The versatile two-way senior helped the Rangers qualify for the playoffs for the first time in this decade after moving from Guymon. Has rushed for 1,329 yards and scored 16 TDs.

DeWitt Jennings III, Bixby: The senior tailback-safety has rushed for 950 yards and makes big plays on both sides of the ball.

Tony Keifer, McAlester: Sophomore quarterback has accounted for 30 TDs.

Stephen Sherwood, Bishop Kelley: Senior tailback has rushed for 1,056 yards and 12 TDs.

Marquee matchup

A potential quarterfinal showdown in Tulsa between perennial power Carl Albert and Bishop Kelley.

Looking ahead

Shawnee and East Central could meet in the semifinals in a rematch of their 2005 semifinal, won by East Central en route to a state title.

Predicted state final

Shawnee 21, Bishop Kelley 17

5A is by far the hardest to forecast, Wow lots of real good teams will be gone after the 2nd round.
