2008 champion

Glenpool (9-1): Warriors looked as if they clearly were the team to beat again until their 23-game winning streak ended with a 34-20 loss to fifth-ranked Oklahoma City Star Spencer on Friday. Star Spencer's win showed that Glenpool is not invincible, and there are about 10 teams in 4A capable of winning state.

Team to beat

Star Spencer (8-2): On quite a roll after a shaky start and could not have looked more impressive in beating Glenpool. The Bobcats are a physical team with explosive ballcarriers. Star Spencer opened district play with four consecutive shutouts and its average margin of victory in seven games was 36.6 points.

Sleeper

Wagoner (7-3): A perennial state-title contender with a lot of momentum after qualifying for the playoffs in the last seconds against Hilldale on Friday. The Bulldogs showed their potential with a victory at then-No. 2 Sallisaw in Week 9. Coach Dale Condict's team has shown in the past that it can win on the road in the playoffs.

Players to watch

Marco Nelson, Glenpool: Senior tailback has rushed for 1,218 yards and scored 19 TDs. Was tremendous in the playoffs last year.

Josh Collier, Oologah: Junior tailback has rushed for 1,369 yards and scored 21 TDs.

Mike Lunsford, Catoosa: Senior linebacker leads a tough defense that allows only 13.6 points. Catoosa went 7-3 despite averaging only 18.5 points.

Prince McJunkins, Wagoner: Junior quarterback has 1,700 total yards this season and a knack for making big plays, as he showed with his winning TD pass against Hilldale on Friday.

Matt Oberste, Sallisaw: Senior quarterback has passed for 1,700 yards and 16 TDs. He also has rushed for 11 TDs.

Marquee matchup

Wagoner at Jay: The top first-round pairing. Wagoner is one of the most dangerous fourth-place teams in the playoffs. Jay is a district champion for the first time since 1989.

Looking ahead

The Wagoner-Jay winner against Glenpool in the quarterfinals if Glenpool defeats Oklahoma City Douglass.

Predicted state final

Glenpool 24, Star Spencer 21

5A and 4A are tough to pick. I like a Glenpool v. McGuinness rubber match.

Star Spencer has some big boys on the front line. They are going to be hard to beat.
