Glenpool ousted by Douglass

GLENPOOL — Oklahoma City Douglass suffocated Glenpool's usually effective ground game and blanked the defending Class 4A state champions, 14-0, in the opening round of the high school football playoffs Friday night.

The loss was the second straight for No. 3 Glenpool, which had won 23 straight games prior to falling to Oklahoma City Star Spencer the previous week in the regular season finale. Glenpool ends with a 9-2 record.

Fifth-ranked Douglass (8-3) has defeated the team ranked No. 1 most of the year and also beat No. 2 Star Spencer in the regular season.

Douglass showed its defensive strength in the game's opening minutes when an into-the-wind 7-yard punt gave Glenpool possession at the Trojans' 34-yard line.

Glenpool picked up a first down but a holding penalty put the Warriors into a passing situation. Derek Allen was sacked for a 7-yard loss on the next play to effectively end the threat.

Douglass then went on a 69-yard drive for the game's first touchdown. The key plays were a 17-yard keeper by quarterback Antyoun Smith and a 9-yard pass from Smith to Marcus Caddell on a critical third down. That was one of only six completions in the game by both teams.

Tailback Kevin Forbes took a pitch from Smith on the next play and bolted around and through the right side of Glenpool's defense for a 35-yard TD run with 1:37 left in the first quarter.

Glenpool did not threaten in the first half, but the Warriors launched an impressive march on the first possession
after intermission. Consistent short gains by star tailback Marco Nelson, a 39-yard pass from Allen to fullback Aaron Espinoza, and a pass interference flag gave Glenpool a first down at the Douglass 8-yard line. However, three straight runs by Nelson netted just 4 yards and a fourth-down pass fell incomplete.

Forbes, running back Quinton Neil and Smith divided the carries for Douglass, which ran the ball 47 times and passed only seven times. Forbes ended with 106 yards on 18 carries. Neil had 81 yards, also on 18 carries.

Nelson carried 27 times for 98 yards for Glenpool. He consistently fought for extra yardage but there were always defenders in his path, and he never came close to breaking a long gainer.

Douglass heads to Wagoner (8-3) for a quarterfinal matchup on Friday.

Reality Check, (11/14/2009 12:05:10 AM)
While losing the last two games was certainly not expected, it wasn't that surprising if you followed this team all year long.
1) The two years prior to this season were dedicated mainly to the class that graduated May '09. There were several quality players who received the bulk of playing time. Therefore, this year's team with the exception of a handful of players had very little game experience.
2) After the Bixby game several offensive starters were pulled game after game having played only about 10 - 15 plays, including the starting quarterback. The district competition was weak and the coaching staff focused on playing younger players. It will benefit Glenpool over the next couple of years but it was seriously detrimental for the end of this season.
3) Glenpool has a very successful program that Coach Edwards has built from the ground up. However, there has always been Plan A (running game - with a featured tailback) and no real Plan B. For the Bixby game there was some creativity and Marco was used in the slot. However, against Star Spencer and Douglass there was no creativity. Just the basic running game with 4 or 5 defenders hitting the hole knowing exactly where the ball was going. I believe Drew Molencupp had zero carries against Douglass. Sometimes if the other team is keying on your best player you have to go to other options. Of course this goes back to the previous point where the starting quarterback was pulled in several games and not getting enough game experience for when it mattered.
4) The defense certainly played well tonight but not so great against Star Spencer. The technique of spinning down players to get speed on the field is good. However, you have to have someone on the line who can control the interior. Last year's team had Vanorsdol and Herring who could handle a lot of the tackle to tackle stuff. The coaches went too light this year and it cost us the last two weeks with teams with bigger lines.

All in all, Glenpool is a great program with quality coaches. But it was a frustrating year in many ways.

I guess no one really knows football in these parts,if you are going to make statement make sure you have all the facts...Do people know that Douglass has the best defense in 4A,the games they lost was do to the offense would turn the ball over five to seven times a game..None of their loses have been truly blow out loses they loose to #1 Weatherford 14-7 and to #2 Mcguinness by the same score..That front line has held 4A'S so call best backs under 100 yards..So please know your facts..If the offense hold on to the ball you cant stop their running game..They have some quality D1 PLAYERS who yet have gotten the attention of other players..

douglass is strong. If they can get organized on offense they can be unstoppable.

4A-1 is still strong even without Clinton. 4A-2 had all they want of 4A-1 Star even got pushed a bit by Elk. Glenpool will be fine in the future.
