Bruins edge past Owasso
Schoenthaler runs for one touchdown and passes for another.
Bartlesville's Kirby Schoenthaler looks for a way around Owasso's Zach Collins in the first quarter of Friday night's game. Schoenthaler threw for a touchdown and ran for another in the win over the Rams. STEPHEN HOLMAN/Tulsa World

OWASSO — Facing fourth-and-inches in his own territory and less than a minute to play, Bartlesville coach Ron Smith took his chances on his offense — even against one of the state's top defenses that held the Bruins to only 34 fourth-quarter yards.
"I know it's weird, but the whole team's standing over here saying, we're going to get it," Smith said. "When the kids believe like that, you do it."
And he did, calling a quarterback rush at his own 46. Kirby Schoenthaler picked up a yard to send the No. 6 Bruins into the quarterfinals with a 14-7 win over Owasso on Friday night at Owasso Stadium.
Bartlesville (9-2) advances to a road game against fourth-ranked Southmoore (10-1) in a quarterfinal contest Friday.
The Bruins struggled against the Rams' defense in the first quarter but cracked through late in the first half. Schoenthaler led Bartlesville on a seven-play, 84-yard drive, capped off with a 7-yard pass to tight end Brad Martin for a 7-0 lead.
The Bruins found more running room against Owasso (6-5) on the first drive of the second half with a 16-play drive that chewed up half of the third quarter. Schoenthaler extended Bartlesville's lead with a 4-yard touchdown run up the middle.
Owasso star Aaron Colvin answered on the next drive with a pair of third-down catches. The Oklahoma commit cut the Rams' deficit to seven with a 3-yard touchdown run.
He continued to shine in the fourth quarter with four receptions of more than 10 yards, bringing Owasso
to Bartlesville's 25 with 3:31 left. With two drives of more than 50 yards, the Rams offense had found its stride.
But the Bruins' defense stuffed Owasso quarterback Kason Key on fourth-and-4 to end the 55-yard drive.
"Our whole team knows our defense is going to step up when it needs to," said Schoenthaler, who was 14-of-25 passing for 140 yards. "That's what it's all about on this team — stepping up when you're called on."
And the Bruins called on Schoenthaler late.
With a minute to go, Schoenthaler rushed 8 yards to the Bruins 46 to set up fourth-and-inches. Bartlesville offensive coordinator James Smith (Ron Smith's son) called for Schoenthaler to fake a sweep and surge for a first down — even though Owasso had held the Bruins to only 2 rushing yards in the fourth quarter. A failed attempt would have given a resurgent Rams passing attack plenty of time to tie the game.
The Bruins' line plowed forward, and Schoenthaler followed.
"It all comes down to that," said Schoenthaler, who picked up one of his 50 rushing yards on the play. "We had that one last play, and we put it all on the line."
