Top-ranked Bishop Kelley scored two late fourth-quarter touchdowns but fell to No. 6 Carl Albert, 34-31, on a 1-yard run from quarterback J.T. Realmuto in double overtime on Friday at Prassa Field.

The Titans senior quarterback rushed for 180 yards on 40 carries and four touchdowns and was 9-of-19 passing for 82 yards with a 28-yard TD pass to Markell Walker.

“We’ve been in these games before with Bixby and Booker T. (Washington),” Kelley coach J.J. Tappana said. “We thought we could wear them down. We knew we were wearing them down. We were going to stay with our game plan and put the ball in our seniors’ hands. There’s no reason for our kids to hang their heads. What a successful season.”

Kelley rallied from a two touchdown deficit, scoring twice in the final 8:45 to force a 21-21 tie and send the game into overtime.

Comet quarterback Jack Cameron scored on a 22-yard run to cut the Titans’ lead to 21-14.

After forcing Carl Albert to punt, the Comets took over at their own 41 with 6:17 remaining. Stephen Sherwood, who finished with 102 yards, had carries of 20, 13 and 6 yards to cap a eight-play drive capped by a 4-yard score by Cameron to send the game into overtime.

Carl Albert got the ball first and scored on a 1-yard run from Realmuto.

Kelley answered with a 5-yard run from Sherwood to knot the game at 28-all.

The Comets (11-1) went on offense to start the second overtime and self-destructed with a holding penalty and delay of game, backing them up to the Titan 21. Two incomplete passes later, Bishop Kelley settled for a 38-yard field goal from Robert Williams.

Realmuto had gains of 2 and 7 yards to set up third and goal at the Comets’ one with the quarterback rolling to his left to score.

“I’ve probably never seen a holding call in overtime,” Tappana said. “That was a pretty surprising call. But they were better than us tonight.”

Comets’ senior receiver Joe Dowdell caught just one pass for 37 yards.

“They did a good job of covering Joe,” Cameron said. “Credit their defense on that. We finally broke out in the second half. We had done this before, gotten down and come back to win,” Cameron said. “No one doubted we would do it again.”

Strong safety Ray Wolber said the team rallied around each other late in the game.

“It’s based on our love for one another, not a trophy,” Wolber said.

Sherwood thought the Comets had it won at the end.

“The whole season we talked about resiliency and we just didn’t come back at the end,” Sherwood said. “It’s bittersweet, we know we did something special but we just didn’t finish it.”

The Comets scored first on a 70-yard fumble return by Jonathan Nuding.

Carl Albert’s Tre Porter fumbled at the Kelley 30 and Nuding scooped up the loose ball and raced in for the score.

The Titans answered with a 63-yard drive, capped off by a 15-yard run by Realmuto. On the drive, Realmuto had runs of 8, 13 and 3 yards before the score and Tre Porter picked up gains of 7 and 16.
