MIDWEST CITY — Broken Arrow eased past Midwest City 24-17 Friday night at Rose Field in the Class 6A quarterfinals. In the process, the Tigers added another significant accomplishment to the record of coach Ron Lancaster.

The victory means that Lancaster, who will retire after the season, has taken all five schools he has coached to at least the state semifinals. Broken Arrow will play Union (11-1) next week.

Junior quarterback Archie Bradley dominated the offensive statistics for the Tigers, with nearly all of their 71 rushing yards and 209 yards through the air on 12-of-24 passing.

He threw for two touchdowns, including a 52-yard bomb on the final play of the first half, and ran for a third.

Carl Salazar rounded out the scoring with a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and a trio of extra points.

A 39-yard scoring pass from Bradley to Ronnie Price, who outfought a defender in the end zone to make the catch, put Broken Arrow ahead for good at 7-3 with 4:59 left in the second quarter.

The Tigers built a 21-3 lead midway through the third period but had to stop two Midwest City drives late in the final period to earn their spot in the semifinals.

Broken Arrow's second touchdown was the result of a 96-yard drive in the final 1:55 of the second quarter after an interception by linebacker Jon Coleman.

Bradley accounted for all of the yardage. He kept the ball on four straight running play for gains of 12, 3, 8 and 21 yards to move the Tigers to their own 48 with three seconds left in the half.

Then wide receiver Alex Cochran somehow got behind the Bombers' prevent defense, caught Bradley's perfectly thrown bomb at about the 12-yard line and roared into the end zone.

Broken Arrow converted a fumble recovery, one of four lost by Midwest City, into Bradley's 19-yard touchdown with 6:15 left in the third period.

But Midwest City dominated the game from that point behind the passing of quarterback Greg Austin, who finished with 17-of-33 for 299 yards.

The Bombers scored on two of their next three possessions, including a 39-yard pass from Austin to James Flanders late in the third quarter and a 5-yard run by J.R. Head midway through the fourth, to narrow the deficit to the final seven-point margin.

Midwest City drove to the Tiger 27 later in the fourth quarter, but the Tiger defense knocked the ball free from Bomber receiver Contrael Colbert and recovered with 5:26 left.

Midwest City got one final shot but, after one first down, the Tiger defense came up with a sack and forced three incompletions to seal the victory.

"Our defense was the story," Lancaster said. "They just came up with big play after big play. I've never cared about the score. I just want my teams to play with a lot of heart. We've been preaching to them all year to play with heart on every play, and they really did that tonight."

Lancaster said he never considered running out the clock late in the first half.

"We were not going to do that as long as we had time to make a play to get us out of that hole," he said. "We just wanted that one play to give us a chance to take a shot. We got that play and then we called a special play that Joe Witcher, our passing game coordinator, had designed, and it worked to perfection."
