OKC Douglass shuts out Wagoner
Trojans limit the Bulldogs to 39 yards of total offense.

WAGONER — Willis Alexander wants the Douglass Trojans to prove the adage defense wins championships.

After No. 4 Oklahoma City Douglass' performance against the No. 9 Wagoner Bulldogs on Friday, the Trojans may be on their way to giving the head coach his wish.

The Trojans held Wagoner to just 48 yards of total offense to vault their way into the Class 4A semifinals, 14-0, on a rainy night in Wagoner.

"That's just what we wanted to do," Alexander said. "We preach defense and our approach led us tonight."

Kevin Forbes used two fourth-quarter touchdown runs to break the stalemate and push Douglass (9-3) to a semifinal final showdown against district rival and No. 1 Weatherford (12-0).

Wagoner's usually dynamic quarterback Prince McJunkins was held in check, thanks not only to the Douglass defense, but muddy and wet playing conditions. The Bulldogs (8-4) fumbled the snap four times, and although they recovered three of the four, they lost a total of 22 yards on those plays.

Douglass' defense was so good, it held the Bulldogs to zero yards of offense and zero first downs in the first half.

Still, Wagoner had a chance to score the game's first points late in the third quarter. Douglass punter Chris Mitchell had a snap go over his head toward the Trojans' end zone. He corralled the ball around the 2 before being flooded with Wagoner defenders. Mitchell appeared to be in his own end zone when he pitched the ball forward on an attempted pass. The officials called intentional grounding and Wagoner took over at the 2.

But a false start penalty sandwiched between two consecutive runs that netted negative yards forced Wagoner to attempt a field goal, which hooked just left of the uprights and kept the game scoreless.

"It was a weird play," Alexander said of the fumbled snap that nearly resulted in a safety. "Our defense did a great job of bowing up right after, and I think that really gave us some confidence."

Douglass used the momentum created from the stop on its next drive as it marched 80 yards on 15 plays to take the lead. Forbes capped the drive with a 6-yard TD run.

Forbes added another touchdown with three minutes left. The senior finished with 132 yards rushing on 22 carries. Fellow running back Quinton Neil added 71 more for the Trojans.

McJunkins and the Bulldogs had one final chance on the game's last drive after a kick return set up Wagoner in Trojans territory. But Wagoner fumbled again on fourth down and the Douglass sideline celebrated.

The Trojans have back-to-back shutouts in their first two playoff games. Douglass defeated Glenpool, 14-0 on Nov. 13.

If you were not there you missed a fairly played game..The officials let the kids go out and play and called it the right down the middle..My hat off to Wagoner's fans, they are the most rowdiest fans I've ever seen...VERY CLASSY.. The turkey legs was good to..

Wouldn't you say the "D" in Douglass stands for defense? Wow, impressive numbers back to back goose eggs and under 50 total yards thats getting it done there. I bet these guys are up for another shot at Weatherford.
