High School Football Notebook: Unstoppable

Coaches at Cascia Hall, Claremore Sequoyah, Dewey and Berryhill have been touting District 3A-3 as the toughest in the state.

Friday night they proved their point. All four teams advanced to the Class 3A state semifinals after victories.

"The last couple of years we were 6-4 and 6-5 and I would tell people we aren't bad," Dewey coach Chris Revard said. "We just played tough opponents. It all paid off last night."

Said Cascia Hall coach Joe Medina, "This shows the strength of our district."

Unfazed: Dewey entered Friday night's 19-14 quarterfinal victory over perennial-power Clinton unfazed by the Red Tornadoes' tradition-rich football program.

"Our kids didn't know a lot about Clinton," Revard said. "They knew they had won a bunch of state championships. But it didn't matter. Our big thing was getting the kids to forget about Metro Christian. Our goal wasn't to win one game, it was to play for a state championship."

Nose guard Austin Osborne and defensive tackle Chase Newman played well, Revard said.

"Their play allowed us to free up our linebackers," the coach said. "We knew we had to swarm the ball and secure our tackles if we were going to win. And we did."

Dewey, in the semifinals for the first time since 1991, will play Berryhill at Skiatook on Saturday. In Week 10, Berryhill beat Dewey 25-6.

Sperry rumbles ahead: Sperry has rolled up nearly 3,300 rushing yards this season, led by a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in Charlie Jones and Barret Bowman.

"It starts with our fullbacks," Sperry coach Robert Park said, referring to Aron Beats and Bill Gordon. "That's how we keep our balance on offense. They have to get going if we are to get the rest of our running game going."

The Pirates rushed for 438 yards and scored six rushing touchdowns in the 55-22 blowout over Stigler.

Sperry is from District 2A-7, which advanced all four of its playoff qualifiers to the quarterfinals. The Pirates play at Kingfisher on Friday.

Second-half surge pays off: All year long the Salina Wildcats have been a second-half team.

So when they fell behind to Sallisaw Central on the first drive of the game, head coach Matt Williams didn't panic.

"They took the opening drive and drove it down our throats," Williams said.

The Wildcats scored the tying TD on Darin Pettit's 5-yard run and rolled to a 26-8 win in a Class A second-round game.

Linebacker Jesse Bales ignited the Salina defense with a sack at the end of the first half.

"The best part of our game all year long has been in the second half," Williams said. "At halftime we told the kids we were pleased with our effort but we weren't tackling very well. We only have two kids that go both ways full-time. If the game stays close we feel like we have the advantage in the second half."

Pettit rushed for 129 yards and three TDs.

"We call him 'Kenwood,' " Williams said. "He came from a little K-8 community (Kenwood) near Salina."

3A-3 is tough, right. But 2A-7 is tough also, they advanced to the quarterfinals. Someone needs to write about them, them being Lincoln Christian, Verdigris, Pawhuska, and Sperry. GO PIRATES!

Cheifs, 3A is down to semi-finals with 4 teams not quarterfinals with 8 teams like 2A. If all 2A-7 teams win this week I'm sure they will write about.

All four playoff qualifiers still alive after Thanksgiving is still darn impressive, 2A or not.
