Defense coming through for Pirates

Through two playoff games, Sperry has rolled up nearly 800 rushing yards in victories over Tahlequah Sequoyah (28-14) and Stigler (55-22). They have run for more than 3,200 yards this season.

Charlie Jones, Barret Bowman and B.J. Driver have been the catalysts for the Pirates' running attack with a combined 2,635 yards and 29 touchdowns.

But it is the job the defense is doing that has Sperry in the Class 2A quarterfinals for the first time since 1993, said head coach Robert Park.

The No. 9 Pirates travel to No. 7 Kingfisher for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday.

"We haven't had anyone run the ball consistently on us," Park said.

Leading the charge is Jacob Battiest, Zack Wenzel, Cole Carr, Steven Humphrey, Bill Gorden, Aron Beats and Driver.

"Our front defensive seven is the most solid part of our team," Park said. "They have to get pressure on the quarterback so that we don't leave our secondary hanging."

Park praised defensive backs Bryce Morrow, Kevin Ervin, Bowman and Jones, saying, "those guys have started to play well together."
