Sallisaw set for next test: Star Spencer

Sallisaw scored 20 first-half points against Oklahoma City McGuinness but struggled to get untracked in the second half against the Irish.

Coach Craig Benson's staff didn't panic.

Instead, they looked to their defense which held the Irish to less than 200 yards offense in a 20-14 quarterfinal victory.

"We left it in the defense's hands," Benson said.

Leading the surge was defensive end Hayden Spencer (five tackles, one for loss and sack), sophomore defensive tackle Zac Wooten (nine tackles) and linebacker Jake Fitzsimmons (four tackles, sack).

The Black Diamonds (11-1) face another tough test in Saturday's semifinals against Star Spencer, who are led by the tailback duo of Darwin Rideau and Terence Olds. The Bobcats are averaging more than 300 rushing yards per game.

The two teams clash at 7:30 p.m. at Sapulpa High School.

Sallisaw counters with QB Matt Oberste (1,919 passing yards, 1,035 rushing, 29 TDs) and tailback Jeromy Davenport (919 yards, 17 TDs).

"They have fantastic backs and ginormous offensive linemen," Benson said. "I like our guys too. Matt and Jeromy make us go on offense."
