Langer, Trojans down SaberCats

Jenks players celebrate after Hunter Johnson (center, with ball) picked up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown during Saturday's game against Southmoore. Doug Hoke / The Oklahoman

OKLAHOMA CITY — The top-ranked Jenks Trojans followed the same plan they have used most of the season in Saturday night's Class 6A semifinal against Southmoore.

Give the ball to Zack Langer and run to another win.

The junior tailback rushed for 135 yards in the first half as the Trojans tamed No. 4 Southmoore for a 44-26 win at Putnam City Stadium. Jenks advances to its 12th state championship game in the last 14 years and will face Union this week for the gold ball.

"We've been working all year to get to the state championship," said Langer, who finished with 281 yards on 31 carries. "We're finally there."

Thanks in large part to Langer. He dominated on the ground in the first half, averaging almost 8 yards on his 17 first-half carries for Jenks (13-0). His early rushes set up a pair of touchdowns on Jenks' first two possessions — an 11-yard pass from Sawyer Kollmorgen to Jacob Bertelli and a 12-yard pass from Kollmorgen to Steven Carpenter.

Langer, whose performance put him over 2,200 yards this season, scored his 35th touchdown of the season in the second quarter. Four plays after Southmoore (11-2) failed on a fourth-down attempt near midfield, the 6-foot, 190-pound workhorse powered his way through the middle and hurdled a defender at the goal line for a 25-yard touchdown.

"Zack just continues to get it done," Jenks interim head coach Loren Montgomery said. "He's a workhorse, and he gets stronger as the game goes on."

Southmoore's trio of Oklahoma commitments kept the game close, despite a Jenks defensive front that finished with six sacks. Junior quarterback Kendal Thompson, found Nyko Symonds for a 22-yard touchdown pass on the last play of the first half. OU-bound defensive back Julian Wilson added a 16-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter out of the Wildcat formation.

And Austin Haywood — a future Sooner and one of the country's top tight ends — ran for a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass and bulldozed his way into the end zone on a two-point conversion to cut Jenks' lead to 37-26 with 5:27 left.

But Langer was too much for the SaberCats. He powered 13 yards for a TD in the fourth quarter and, after Haywood's catch, bowled through the defensive line and sped 54 yards into the end zone to seal the win.

"I just fought through there and got every yard I could," Langer said.

Jenks will look to cap its perfect season next week against Union. It's the seventh time since 1998 that Union and Jenks will meet for a state championship and the third time in a row. A victory would give Jenks its 10th gold ball in the last 14 years.

"It's sweet, but we're still on a mission," Jenks defensive back Devin Pugh said. "We've got to finish it. It won't be sweet until we get that gold ball."

A dandy game! For Southmoore to reach the semis and play such a good game in year 2 is a tribute to committed coaching, motivated players and a dedicated program. Great job, both teams! Go Trojans!!

Congrats Trojans!!! Great season and good luck with the next one.... If the offensive line can dominate Union, you're the best in a long time!!!! If not, QB will have to have best nite to compete..... good luck.

We'll really see how good Langer is next year when he doesn't have those two bohemoths blocking for him. Hard to say who I like in this game, like choosing between AIDS and cancer.
