Defending state champion

Pawnee (28-2) surprised most experts last season by defending its state title despite the graduation of Keiton Page. Coach David Page's team will be the favorite this year with all five starters returning — Ralston Moore, Desmond McCosar, Tate Beer, Kyle Klaus and Jake Smith.

Top area contenders

Lincoln Christian (19-9) showed toughness to win five playoff games in a row through the losers bracket to reach the state tournament. Junior guard Clay Wilson is expected to be one of the state's top scorers and gives coach Teddy Owens' team a chance to battle for a gold ball.

Preston (24-7) moves up to 2A after winning the Class A state title. Coach Dirk Walden's team has four returning starters — Kalian Watkins, Tevin Talton, Willie Huffman and Eric Motte.

Talihina (25-5) has three returning starters from last season's state runner-up team — Taggart Lockhart, Jordan Eagle Road and Chris Capsey.

Players to watch

Willie Huffman

Preston, 5-9, Jr., G

Was the most valuable player in the Class A state tournament last year. Made the winning basket with one second left in overtime in the semifinals. Also sank the tying 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining to send the title game into overtime.

Taggart Lockhart

Talihina, 6-4, Jr., G

Was the leading scorer in the 2A state tournament last season with 55 points in three games. Averaged 22.5 points overall for the season.

Ralston Moore

Pawnee, 6-1, Sr., G

Was the 2A state tournament's most valuable player last March. Sank the winning free throw with 1:04 left in the title game. Averaged 13.1 points overall for the season.
