Defending state champion

Cascia Hall (19-10) loses All-Metro player of the year and state tournament MVP Will Bryant, but coach Brian Rahilly's team returns five key players — Luke Bryant, Matt Prueitt, Stephen Rouse, Bear Hawkins and A.Z. Moyer.

Top area contenders

Sperry (15-10) showed improvement in Lance Kight's first year as coach and should build on that this season with three returning starters — senior guard Bobby Bridgeman and sophomores C.J. Cole and Forrest Torix.

Tahlequah Sequoyah (19-9) is a perennial state title contender, and this season shouldn't be any different as coach Larry Grigg has four starters returning — Cody Fourkiller (who averaged 13 points), Travis Sanders, Jarrett Travis and Kialo Vann.

Verdigris (14-12), the 2008 state champion, had a rebuilding year after Rotnei Clarke's graduation, but appears to be ready for another state tournament run with five returning starters — Jake Culver, Jared Whitmire, Austin Monroe, Andre Bernier and Andrew Parham — in Randy Upshaw's second season as the Cardinals' coach.

Players to watch

Luke Bryant

Cascia Hall, 6-2, Sr., G

Had 31 points in three state tournament wins last March. The sharpshooter was described by Cascia coach Brian Rahilly as "our assassin all week."

C.J. Cole

Sperry, 6-7, So., C

Has the potential to be a very dominating inside player. Averaged 15.8 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.3 blocks as a freshman. His favorite athlete is Larry Bird.

Jake Culver

Verdigris, 6-4, Jr., C

Was the Cardinals' third-leading rebounder in their 2008 state championship season. Averaged 14.7 points as a sophomore.
