OKLAHOMA CITY — A former OSSAA official was accused Monday of embezzling $457,500 from the organization.

Danny Rennels admitted to the association's then-board president "that he had embezzled the money and spent it on Internet gambling," a district attorney's investigator reported.

Rennels, 58, of Verden was charged in Oklahoma County District Court with one count of embezzlement, a felony.

He was fired in March from the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association after the alleged misappropriation was discovered. The nonprofit association regulates high school sports in Oklahoma.

Too many embezzlement cases lately---gambling and drugs taking their toll---how ONE person can get their hands on so much cash/checks is beyond me---must be this "creative accounting" of 2007-2009!!

Whats the deal? The complete article at NewsOk was no different than the TW article.

Hey what happened, this one didn't make it to the million dollar mark. Most of them have lately.

The sad part about irwindale's comment is that it's probably true.

(Bobdog sits and mulls that one over.)

Thunder, great question. Maybe he felt this sin was a white lie type sin since it was such a small amount taken in the past 5 years.

Who in the H double LL, is supposed to be watching these people?, I see kids going to school with tattered and worn-out books, teachers begging and mooching classroom supplies.,This really makes me MAD,, Someone elected needs to get involved.

A little background info regarding the annual budget, where OSSAA funds originate, who requests and approves transactions, etc., would make an interesting story.

Truly a sad day for high school sports...The whole system is broken. Moreover, the association is beyond any subtantial reform.

Who suffers the most? The participating students and inner city youth? Who wins? The elite suburban schools and private schools..

This scenario will happen over and over again.

There's a little more info in the TW hard copy this morning. (Don't see it here.) I wondered how he was able to embezzle anything, but apparently Rennels took several donations, includng one for $100,000 from Reebok.

Also didn't realize until today this group also focuses on activites beyond sports, such as music, speech and debate.

The prosecutor in this case expects the money to be paid back by supporters and relatives of Rennels.

Age 58? He looks like 78. Emezzling must be a high-stress endeavor, or maybe just too much smoking and booze? Or, do they just have his age stated incorrectly?

Why was he charged with only 1 count of embezzlement, date of offense 9/1/2005? The court documents state at least 10 separate event occurrences. Something is not right.

Now we know why he moved state championship games from Cox to KSBI (no coverage in Tulsa) a few years ago. According to coaches.aid website he took three $15,000 checks from them before making the change. He put it to HS fans in Tulsa to line his own pockets.

1.
Don't assume he's telling the truth about losing the money. He may have canisters buried in any number of places. Watch him and his family carefully for years to come.

2.
The OSSAA is badly in need of an independant audit of not only finances, but also the unequal way they grant or deny wavers to athletes who transfer between the top athletic schools in Oklahoma.

Athletes are supposed to sit out 12 months from athletics when they transfer schools.

Metro's Beau Marsaln has quarterbacked 5 different schools in the past 5 years! That needs a good, long explaination!

D Van, you know the answer to both those questions.
1) Renard Johnson played for Union not once but twice and Jenks once in between during his high school career. Current Union players Colton Dost and Stephen Stadler both played at Jenks the previous two years. Two years ago, four Westmoore soccer players transferred to Edmond Memorial to win a State Championship, three of them lived together in an apartment.
Apartment dwelling is the loophole.

2) Marsaln moves when his mother/teacher and father/ football coach obtain new employment. You may not agree with this practice, but restricting the parents' rights to pursue careers is not a viable solution.
