SHAWNEE — Beggs freshman Regan Ward has been rolling on the cross country trail all fall. She capped off her season Saturday with a capture of the Class 3A state meet on the grounds of Gordon Cooper Technology Center.

Ward won the 2-mile run with a time of 12:05.98, beating Stroud's Danae McGee by nearly seven seconds. McGee, a sophomore who was the state champion last year, finished with a time of 12:12.82.

"It feels so good," Ward said. "I'm so excited to come here and run my first state championship meet. I was definitely nervous, but I was just going to come here and see what I could do and it turned out really good."

The race began with Ward trailing at least one runner. But she paced herself to the front and never looked back.

"I was thinking not to let (the runners behind her) back in the lead because that would give them confidence to the last mile, and I was just going to run as hard as I could and try to make the finish line first," Ward said.

"I knew that if I ran to the tape as hard as I could, I would probably win it. I was thinking, 'Go for the tape and do your best.' "

Mission accomplished.

Ward came to Beggs as a move-in from Preston this year, but the move hasn't been too big of a jump for her.

"I've ran in AAU meets, so I've ran against a lot of really good girls," Ward said.

The state championship was the last of a long line of first-place finishes for Ward this fall. She had also won meets at Okmulgee, the University of Tulsa, Inola, Tahlequah Sequoyah, Edison, Holland Hall, Chandler, Shawnee and last week's regional in Coweta.

Ward and McGee have known each other since age 12, Ward said.

"She is such a good runner," Ward said of McGee. "We're definitely going to train as hard as we can to compete with each other."

Plainview won the girls team title for the fourth straight year with 33 points. Adair produced the highest finish for an area team, landing at fourth with 159 points. Tahlequah Sequoyah was sixth (190).

Lucien Corriveau of Riverside was the winner of the boys 5k race with a time of 16:31.17.

Robert Ketcher of Tahlequah Sequoyah was the top area finisher in the boys meet. He took 15th place in 18:16.22.

Jones was the boys team champion with 77 points. Tahlequah Sequoyah was runner-up with 122. Cascia Hall placed 12th with 273, and Perry took 15th with 300.

In Class 2A, Coriann Hoar of Watonga became state champion after winning the girls' 2-mile race in 12:26.89.

Laura Kunz of Lincoln Christian was highest placer from the area, finishing at 15th with a time of 13:20.90.

Watonga won the girls team state championship with 61 points. Lincoln Christian took eighth with 218 points, Tonkawa took 13th with 313, and Webbers Falls was 15th with 458.

Oklahoma Bible Academy won the 2A boys championship with 44 points. Lincoln Christian was the highest placer for area teams, logging at sixth with 188.

Cale Eidson of Calera was the state medalist with a time of 16:14.54.
