Sports editor Mike Strain’s blog: BTW students penalized because administrators chose not to follow rules.

After weeks of investigation revealed the use of more than 40 ineligible student-athletes, Booker T. Washington High School has turned to a familiar face to bail out a storied athletic department reeling from scandal.

Former Hornets boys basketball coach Mike Mims will rejoin the school as assistant principal over athletics, Tulsa Public Schools announced Wednesday.

"I'm a Hornet through and through," said Mims, who won three state titles and was the team's head coach from 1972-1982. "We're going to go forward from here. The past is the past, and the future is now."

Mims will try to help rebuild a program tainted by eligibility problems.

On Wednesday, TPS announced that 37 student-athletes were ruled academically ineligible in four sports earlier this season because the school failed to do mandatory checks of players' grades.

Those checks were supposed to begin on Sept. 14 but didn't start until the week of Oct. 12, according to a report released last week by the district.

"We did not pay attention to something so basic as taking eligibility checks," TPS Superintendent Keith Ballard said. "It was people who were in a position to carry out that responsibility that did not carry out that responsibility."

The district found that Booker T. Washington's football team used 16 ineligible players — including seven starters — in a 90-0 win over Miami on Oct. 2. Booker T. Washington forfeited that game Wednesday.

The minimum penalty for using an ineligible player is forfeiting games, according to the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association's rules.

The Hornets used seven academically ineligible players the next week against Pryor and 15 against Hale the week after that. The team already forfeited those victories last week because of a violation of recruiting rules. Those forfeits will keep the Hornets out of the playoffs, despite winning the Class 5A state championship last season and being ranked No. 1 to start the year.

"What grieves me the most about this whole process is the harm that has been done to students, to athletes who have worked very hard all summer to showcase their abilities," Ballard said. "I have great sorrow for the kids and the price that they have had to pay with this."

The Hornets' volleyball team forfeited four matches — including its regional championship and a first-round victory over Tahlequah in the state tournament — for using an academically ineligible player. The team must return its regional plaque to the OSSAA and has been placed on warning by the district.

"When all this started, I really hoped that the problems didn't include volleyball because they had such a great year," TPS athletic director Stephanie Spring said. "It's very disappointing. But at the same time I feel a sense of guilt because they took a spot in the state tournament of a team playing eligible players."

Booker T. Washington's softball team used at least four academically ineligible players, and the junior varsity cross country team also used an ineligible runner.

Wednesday's findings come eight days after six other students — five football players and one softball player — were ruled ineligible for violations of residency or recruiting rules.

"I was a little hurt, but at the same time I know we all make mistakes," said Mims, a Booker T. Washington graduate. "Mistakes were made, and we all own up to our mistakes. We had some things that we had to do to correct them, and I'm part of the correction process."

Mims will begin his third stint at the school.

He coached Wayman Tisdale and followed him to the University of Oklahoma, where Mims was an assistant coach for 13 years under Billy Tubbs. Mims came back to Booker T. Washington as a dean from 1997-1999.

Mims will get help from baseball coaches John Potocnik and Jason Doctor, who were named co-athletic directors Wednesday. They will take over for Antwain Jimmerson, who last week was suspended through the end of the school year as athletic director and head football coach.

All of the district's penalties are self-imposed. The OSSAA will review those penalties at its monthly board of directors meeting on Nov. 11, said OSSAA executive secretary Ed Sheakley.

Mike Mims bio

1969-1972: Assistant boys basketball coach, Booker T. Washington

1972-1982: Head boys basketball coach, Booker T. Washington

1982-1994: Assistant men’s basketball coach, University of Oklahoma

1997-1999: Dean, Booker T. Washington

1999: Retires. Later spends time as a dean at Hale, an assistant principal at Sand Springs and learning director at Gilcrease Middle School.

OSSAA’s eligibility rules

According to OSSAA rule 3:

“Scholastic eligibility for students will be checked after three weeks (during the fourth week) of a semester and each succeeding week thereafter. …

“A student must be passing in all subjects he/she is enrolled in during a semester. If a student is not passing all subjects enrolled in on the day of the grade check, he/she will be placed on probation for the next one-week period. …

“A student who has lost eligibility under this provision must be passing all subjects in order to regain eligibility.”

I don't know Coach Mims personally, but I hear he is a very good man.

Sounds like the right guy to clean up the mess.

"...as its new assistant principal over athletics,..."

What? They have an Assistant Principal over athletics? I never heard of such thing. Schools have Principals and Assistant or Vice Principals of schools, but over only athletics? No wonder our schools are always in a budget crunch.

Jason Doctor missed his calling, he should have become a doctor, then will would have been Dr. Doctor. heh heh heh

It's good to see Booker T returning to it's traditional neighborhood roots. His hiring will, at least for the time being, keep the North Tulsa community involved with the school.

I remember Coach Mims from the old Whitney days. Now if H.J. Green would come out of retirement and return as BTW principal, he and Coach Mims could restore that school's reputation in a heartbeat. Talk about your pillars.

H.J. Green was Hale's loss and BTW's gain in the early 1970's.

Mar - Mims will replace Geoff Woodson as assistant principal. Woodson will be transferred to Memorial. We all know Mims is an honest guy and wins playing by the rules.

Coach Jimmerson's problem is not a "training" issue. It is a character flaw. He knew that grades needed to be checked regularly. Every high school student knows that basic fact. He somehow thought that he was above the mere mortal rules that the rest of the athletic world has to follow. TPS needs to fire him for the negative impact he has had on so many young lives.

How sad this is happening. No telling what else they will find out at other schools esp Casica Hall. No telling how many games and championship they will have to give up.

I have known coach Mims as a referee for young kids. He seemed to really enjoy the kids and they really liked him as well. He will do a great job at BTW.

Mr Mims will likely fix the bad habits and move on. As for the ineligible starters, if they are talented as they likely are, College programs ready to exploit them again, await there services either direct entry or after a period at a JUCO, whatever the grades are. It is time to provide athletes with another path to the profession many of them aspire to. A minor league system, funded by the NFL, with NFL Players Association protections seems like a workable plan.

gruner-exploit them? You are kidding right! It is time that everybody that means students, coaches parents etc., realize there are penalties for what you do- there are no shortcuts. Period end of sentence! You break a rule you pay! the sooner you realize that in life the better off you will be! Quit making excuses, quit blaming other people , if you knew about it you are guilty! Period.
