The Booker T. Washington softball team went undefeated to win the All-City championship this week, ending a dominant streak by Memorial in the event.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Lahr’s pitching and key hits from Amelia Taylor and Katie Springs helped fuel Booker T. Washington’s two wins Thursday that gave the Hornets the title.

Lahr had nine strikeouts in the two wins Thursday - 4-3 over Memorial and 9-5 over Edison in the title game.

“I was very excited," Booker T. Washington coach Bryan Howell said. "For one, it was the first time we’ve ever won the All-City, plus we beat Memorial for the first time."

Washington’s win over Memorial snapped a streak of eight consecutive years that the Chargers had won the event. Memorial had a 32-0 record in the previous eight seasons of the All-City.

In Washington’s win over Memorial, Taylor’s two-run double to deep centerfield gave Washington the lead. Outfielders TyShonna Harris and Rachel Patterson also made catches in the fifth inning to preserve the win.

In the title game, Springs had a three-run triple. The senior catcher's hit to right-centerfield drove in the go-ahead runs against Edison in the third inning.

Booker T. Washington went 4-0 in the tournament, which opened the Hornets’ season. The Hornets had two wins Wednesday against Hale - 25-6 and 20-0.

“I was very pleased” with the team, Howell said. “We’re pretty young, so there were a lot of question marks to how we would do in a game situation. It’s a good start. We have a lot more to go, though.”
