Girls basketball: Players to watch

Lindsey Hammer

Correction: A Wednesday Tulsa World Sports story misspelled the name of Tahlequah Sequoyah basketball player Lindsey Hammer. This story has been corrected.

A look at five of the top players in the Tulsa area heading into the 2009-10 girls basketball season:

Lindsey Hammer

Tahlequah Sequoyah • Senior

Tahlequah Sequoyah faltered last year after the graduation of a standout senior class that won three state championships in four years. The Indians turned to forward Lindsey Hammer, who poured in 16 points and nine rebounds a game.

“She does it all for us,” Sequoyah coach Bill Nobles said. “She plays every spot we have. She’s played guard, she’s played post.

And she’s played well. Hammer, a senior, bulked up during the summer and has improved her rebounding to give Sequoyah more of an interior presence. Nobles said he think it’ll be enough to help the Indians play more like its recent run of 107 wins in four seasons than its 15-12 mark last year.

Hammer has verbally committed to play at Mercer thanks to a sweet shot — she made 50 percent of her 3-point attempts during the Indians’ 2007 state championship year.

“That’s what Mercer was really impressed with,” Nobles said.

“They went down and worked with her over the summer, and she shot the lights out.

Morgan Toben

Owasso • Senior

Her inside-outside presence
drew the attention of most of Conference USA and a handful of other Division I colleges. And Rams coach Mark Vancuren is already trying to figure out how he can fill her void next year when Toben heads to the University of New Mexico.

“You can’t really replace it,” Vancuren said. “It’s outstanding to have someone who can go inside and post up but take a bigger player outside and force them to guard you on the perimeter.

Toben chose the Lobos over Rice, Memphis and Missouri State, among others.

At 6-foot-3, she’s big enough to dominate inside. She averaged a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. But she also made 40 percent of her 3-point attempts, forcing opponents to challenge her on the perimeter.

Toben led Owasso in scoring during her sophomore and junior years and was on the Rams’ state champion volleyball team in 2008.

“She’s just a really good athlete,” Vancuren said.

Jenni Bryan

Coweta • Senior

A family tragedy has forced Bryan to mature on and off the court this year. Her father, former Oklahoma All-American and NFL player Rick Bryan, died in July, and Coweta coach Krista Ragan-Binam has seen a change in Jenni.

“She’s grown up,” Ragan-Binam said. “She’s had to grow up over the last couple months, and it definitely shows in her playing.

Jenni Bryan averaged 21.2 points per game last year at guard/forward, and her 11.2 rebounds per game was the most among Class 5A area players. She’s verbally committed to play at Oklahoma State.

Her shooting has improved over the offseason, and her mental game has improved after a rough summer.

“I wondered how much better she would get this year, especially with some of the stuff she’s been forced to deal with since July,” Ragan-Binam said. “But she has taken her game completely to another level.

Christian Key

Victory Christian • Senior

Key was among the area’s leading scorers last year at 20.3 points per game. After bulking up in the summer to improve her 5- foot-10 frame, Key could be poised for even bigger results this year.

“She has a slender build,” coach Billy Carter said, “and she’s worked very hard to get stronger to prepare not only for her senior year but for the college game.

Key has verbally committed to Oral Roberts University because she wanted to attend a Christian school close to home. The Golden Eagles will get a great shooter — Key shot 40 percent from 3-point range last season — and someone who’s working on her inside game. She averaged 8.3 rebounds last season.

“She’s just a complete player,” Carter said.

“The thing I’ve been preaching to her since last year is she’s got to get stronger, and she’s in the process of doing that.

Kristen Kelley

Bishop Kelley • Senior

One of the top guards in the state. Her 13.2 points per game last year helped her make the Tulsa world’s second-team All-Metro list.

And here’s the kicker: Basketball isn’t even her best sport. Kelley will attend Oklahoma State next year on a soccer scholarship.

“I don’t know beans about soccer,” Kelley basketball coach Chris Whitty said, “but they tell me she’s a fabulous soccer player.

Whitty knows Kelley’s a fabulous basketball player. Kelley’s quickness and athleticism have made her one of the top point guards in a loaded Class 5A. She averaged 3.1 assists and 3.6 steals per game last season.

Kelley has improved her shooting in her high school career and shot 43 percent last year.

She’s within sight of reaching 1,000 career points this year.

“All I know is she can drive to the basket,” Whitty said, “and she can play defense like you won’t believe.

Kansas player, Kortni Kendrick, was named "Most Valuable Player" in 3A by Coachesaid TIPOFF magazine for 2010. Obviously, they know 'who to watch'. Kansas will be bringing home the gold ball this year. Come on Tulsa World, give these players the recognition they deserve. Get ready Sequoyah, Kansas will be bringin' it!

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Kendrick and Barnwell were both listed under 3A teams to watch. Maybe strength of schedule has something to do with the top five list. Kansas plays teams like Colcord and Salina every year, while Sequoyah plays teams like Sapulpa,Jenks and Broken Arrow. Lin-z Hammer is 5'6" and averaged 16.3 ppg and Nikki Lewis is 5'0" and averaged 14.4 playing 6A teams, while Kendrick is 6'1" and averaged 14.1 and Barnwell averaged 13.6 against teams like Jay and Colcord. Quit playin that tired old "Private School" card and give props where they're due!!

You're right, I forgot to mention them playing Adair, but it still doesn't invalidate my point...Strength in schedule. Kansas has a great bunch of players, but you are letting your emotions get in the way of reason. Sequoyah has to play 5A and 6A schools because schools in 3A won't play them in regular season play. It makes them stronger and gives their players credibility among their peers. We really don't care if you want Sequoyah or not, you're stuck with them. You have nothing to fear, but fear itself{and the MIGHTY SEQUOYAH INDIANS]

I'm glad you find humor in reason. It's anyone's season and we'll see who makes it to the playoffs this year. Kansas fans {not all but the most vocal} seem to feel the need to attack Sequoyah players. Kansas has some good players, but Sequoyah has good players too with better numbers against better teams. Yeah Kansas made the state tourney last year and that's something to be proud of.

Oh now we're going to play the recruiting card. I do believe that Kansas has a sophomore from Westville who had to sit out last season. And I'm pretty sure one of the Kansas coaches tried wooing the Goodrich family when Angel was a freshman. So let's not go there. Sequoyah girls could have averaged 30 ppg against Colcord. Go NDNS

guys, guys. guys!!! this is the tulsa world not the usatoday. we are talking about a reporter writing about HS girl's basketball who would rather write about NBA....he is earning his stripes...give him time.

I can't believe there isn't a single Kansas girl on this list.. With three players named to last year's all tourney team at the state tournament returning, there isn't even one listed in the class by class players to watch. Kansas is going to run through every team on this list with ease (including your precious private school T-Sequoyah and their superstar Lindsey Hammer). Tulsa World is garbage!! Go Comets!!!

I'm just saying that any good writer would do some research and recognize girls that deserve to be recognized. If he doesn't want to write about HS girl's basketball, he shouldn't. If he doesn't want to do the research, then there shouldn't be a big, spread like this in the Tulsa World. It might not be the NBA, but it is very importnant to a lot of people.

ndnball you're hilarious...
Kansas beat Sequoyah in area last season... Also, Kansas made the state tournament and had 3 players make the all tournament team.. All of which are back this season by the way. One of them, Barnwell, was a freshman, and she made first team all-tournament. She's getting letters from all over the country, but somehow she isn't listed as a player to watch?? How many all-tournament players did Sequoyah have at state last year?? Oh yeah, they were watching from the stands..
Play 6A and 5A schools all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that when it comes to comparing distance travelled in the playoffs, Kansas is the better team, with the better players. Strength of schedule doesn't matter in high school basketball, what matters is who makes it farther in the playoffs.

Kansas > Sequoyah =)

What do you mean reason?? Better numbers against better teams?? What about when the 2 teams played one another?? I believe Kansas had better numbers.. The fact is, sometimes the Kansas girls will only play half the game because they win by so much.. If they wanted, they could probably have 3 girls average 16 or more points if they played the whole game..
Also, no one is attacking anyone, just simply stating that perhaps this article doesn't give credit where credit is due. When this matchup happens, everyone will see who deserves the credit.
But who knows, the season hasn't started, so its possible that in the offseason T-S has been able to bring in a 7 foot girl from Florida who will average 30. Or possibly taken some good players from Tahlequah, Keys, or Jay.
Haha go "Kansas!!" Beat the combination of players that has come together from across the state that plays for T-S!!

Yes, I agree with Caser...You have two girls from Kansas, Kendrick and Barnwell, being recruited by division 1 schools (Arkansas, Kansas State and more)and they aren't even included in the players to watch?
I guess the major college scouts know "who to watch" and the Tulsa World throws together stories with minimum research OR effort to sell papers...What a joke.

Yes, and they play Adair twice each year (defending state champions) But you wouldn't want to invalidate your point by listing them or the fact that they are in the Best of the Best.
If you like 5A and 6A so much, TAKE your private school and stay there. We don't want you.
Oh, and Kansas says "bring on Seq." My money is on the Comets for it all this year!
