U.S.-WORLD
Ricky Sandoval
, the Detroit Lions' director of security since 2001, died Thursday in Detroit. He was 49.
Sandoval had been battling pancreatic cancer that lasted more than three years.
Team president Tom Lewand says Sandoval "set a new standard for courage" in fighting cancer.
The Lions' indoor practice field recently was named "Sandoval Field" in his honor.
Sandoval in 2006 was named the team's recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award, which recognizes men of courage in the NFL and is awarded to a player from each of the league's 32 franchises. But Lions players, coaches and staff agreed the much-loved Sandoval deserved the award.
Ernie Salvatore
, whose career as a writer, editor and sports columnist in Huntington, W.Va., spanned nearly 60 years, died Friday. He was 87.
Salvatore died at his Huntington home, The Herald Dispatch newspaper said.
The native of Greenwich, Conn., worked for The Herald-Advertiser and later The Herald-Dispatch. Herald-Dispatch Executive Editor Ed Dawson called Salvatore a mentor to generations of journalists.
In April 2008 the press box at Marshall University's football stadium was named in Salvatore's honor. Interim athletic director David Steele said Friday Salvatore was a part of the Marshall family.
Salvatore had a role in the 2006 Warner Brothers film "We Are Marshall," which chronicles the university as it copes with a 1970 plane crash that killed most of its football team.
Salvatore's character was played by actor Mark Oliver.
Norman Welton
, whose 31-year career as a photo editor for The Associated Press included coverage of New York City, the United Nations and four Olympic Games, died Wednesday of colon cancer in Port Jervis, N.Y. He was 81.
Welton joined the AP in his native Chicago just after high school in 1946. He started as a part-time messenger and rose steadily through a series of posts there before becoming a senior photo editor at the company's New York headquarters in 1961.
His 44-year career with the AP was interrupted by two years of Army service at the Pentagon's communications center during the Korean War in 1952-53. He retired in 1992.
Welton's role as assignment editor included Associated Press sports coverage and extended to the summer Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976, Moscow in 1980 and Los Angeles in 1984, and the winter games at Lake Placid, N.Y., in 1984.
He was active in the Wire Service Guild, the union representing news employees at AP and United Press International and was its administrator for five years during the 1970s.
