Major Problems Licked - Tulsa's Gift to 2007 to Be Buried June 15
From June 6, 1957: Only technical difficulties "such as striking oil in making the excavation,'' stood in the way today as Golden Jubilee, Inc., prepared to bury a new Plymouth automobile and assorted 1957 artifacts in a vault in the Courthouse lawn to be unearthed 50 years hence.

Buried Belvedere vault full of water

By World staff
6/13/2007

Video: Watch a video taken Wednesday showing the Belvedere submerged in water.

The vault in which Tulsa buried a Plymouth Belvedere 50 years ago was built to withstand a nuclear attack.

Water, apparently, not so much.

Workers lifted the vault's lid Wednesday morning to find about two feet of standing water and indications the vault may have been filled to the rim sometime during the past half-century.

The car itself remained encased in several layers of purportedly water-tight material, its precise condition a mystery. The outline of the Belvedere's trademark tailfins was clearly visible under the coverings, but hopes for recovering the car in something like pristine condition faded.

Rain at mid-morning brought work at the site to a halt. The vault was covered with a canopy and opaque plastic attached to the chain link fence surrounding to keep spectators from looking in. Workers hoped to assess the condition of the steel skid supporting the Belvedere.

The condition of the time capsule, which in appearance resembles a small propane tank, was not clear.

The discovery of water in the vault was particularly difficult for the scores of volunteers who have worked for more than 18 months on the car's excavation. Their chairwoman, Sharon King Davis, wiped away a tear as she surveyed the vault.

She brightened a few minutes later, though, and said, 'The party goes on!'

In addition to Friday's unearthing and unveiling activities, two Tulsarama car shows featuring 500 classic automobiles and a Saturday night sock hop are scheduled for the weekend.

Find complete coverage of Tulsa's famous buried car: An archive of every Tulsa World and Tulsa Tribune story about the 1957 Plymouth Belvedere; a slide show and video of the burial; and a schedule of events for the unearthing Friday. Readers also can submit their own stories and photos.

It wouldn't matter to me if was pristine or the "bucket of rust" that it is, it's still a wonderful car. Not because of it's actual material value but because of the history surrounding it. I have never heard of any other city burying a car as a time capsule, and watching the old film of the 1957 celebration and burial and also seeing the old pictures of it and hearing the stories - and now seeing it come out of the ground, is truly a unique experience. So the technology used in 1957 didn't pan out as planned, who was to know? They did the best they could with what they had and hindsight is always 20-20. The Prowler placed in the time capsule may not do much better, only time will tell. I'd rather have the Belvedere as it sits than the Prowler (or any of the other immaculate cars at the car show) anyway, they've already moved the Prowler once which deducts time capsule points in my book. And anyway, a car in a time capsule? it's already been done so no points for originality either. Obviously the Belvedere is past restoration, unless every part of it was replaced, and that would be a pity, as it wouldn't even be the same car. No, leave her as she is, a one-of-a-kind piece of Tulsa's history and one with character to spare.

I have recently heard that the water and mud may have come into the vault from a water main break around 1977 which destroyed the street adjoining the vault. It is my understanding that the whole street and pavement had to be dug up and repaired. I do remember one downtown in the past shown on TV which poured water out for quite some time.

This should just be a fun little event-something novel and showing a sence of adventure on the part of those that went before us, even if their science wasn't perfect; yet here in the "Bible Belt" some people can't resist using any and every possible occasion to get on a soapbox to promote their hyper-religious views. The car is wet because Tulsa isn't Christian enough? <from Chris>. PLUEEZE. Give it a rest.l

Well I think its a real shame that water has got in - I wonder if the prior 'test' unearthing earlier in the month broke any seals? I am curious to know exactly how the water ingress occurred?

One of my favourite cars, the Belvedere. Anyway looking forward to seeing the rest of it taken out and what they find.

Hats off to you all, great idea, fascinating to read and despite the set-bak of a little H2O, Tulsans (is that right?) can feel proud of their city for at least trying to do something innovative and that has captured the publics imaginations for 50 years! Well done!

People are risking their lifes as we sit at our computers and bash our own cities, Baghad suck Tulsa is not so bad. In a small town like mine I will be easy to find. How about we get them to make a deal today, I will started heading down there now and come get it.Even if water got to the car, the limited oxygen in there would help slow rust, Hell I have restored cars that were a third less steel than when they were new.Just looking at the pictures I can tell that car would be fine. I have a feeling the car is fine, Look at how the bag is still pulled up against the car. If the bag had failed , when they pumped out the water, the water inside would pull the bag and be bloated around the bottom. The hard part will be cleaning the greasy mess off the car. Any condition, I will gladly haul it off!

I am disappointed with all the negative comments. So it might not be in great condition. I don't think that was the point. Look at all the interest this is generating. The stories, the questions, the good memories. Yes, it's too bad, but it's not so bad. Years from now, it'll either be in a museum as it is OR someone will restore it to pristine condition. I would proudly display it in my garage as it is just so that I could say to my neighbor, 'I've got a little story to tell you......."

The Critic... was talking with my neighbor yesterday evening... We figure it will be more of a curse to win the car than a blessing. Will have to pay taxes on it, then knowing how Tulsa operates - the person will get a ticket/fine for not having the vehicle tagged/registered. Then will get another ticket for owning such the eyesore, then another for the hazardous waste that was in the swimming pool that they had to have HazMat out to look at. Then on top of it all, Borg Steel will only give them $20 for the rusted scrap steel...

I am uhappy with all the negative comments. It was buried with good intentions and with the best technology available in 1957. I am not surprised at the comments by some of the snooty 57 Chevy crowd. I have put up with them for the past 30 yrs. that I have owned my beloved restored coral & white 57 Ford Sunliner Convertible. It might interest you to know that there were 77,000 of them sold compared to only 50,000 or so 57 Chevy convertibles and 57 Fords outsold 57 Chevys across the board that year! Regardless, 57 Plymouths were beautiful and fantasticaly advanced cars that year as stated in their ads

"Suddenly it's 1960". I am anxious to see it as I remember very well when it was buried as a part of the "Arrows to Atoms" Semi-centennial celebration in summer of 1957. I was 14 at the time,Car Crazy, and hoped to be around when it is retrieved. Luckily, I am even though I have been fighting stage 4 colon cancer for the past 4 yrs.!! Since submarine technology was nicely in place when this car was buried we know that thick welding ws available. Placing it inside a moderate wall thickness suitable diameter pipe with even SCH40 FD heads and purging the interior with argon or even Nitrogen to save $ would result in a pristine vehicle. Which judging by this years Barrett-Jackson Auction would be able to command several MILLION dollars. Hindsight is usually 20-20

Oh, come on. This isn't a metaphor for Tulsa's progress as a city. Frankly, from where I sit--a place that has had about 100 years longer than Tulsa to really screw things up where city planning is concerned--Tulsa's development looks fantastic. It was a great place to grow up, and from what I can tell from reading the news sporadically it still is.

I wish I could be there for the unearthing of the Belvedere. To me, it's a symbol of how hopeful and forward-looking the citizens of Tulsa were in the 50s, and it will be neat to see what they thought was important to show the citizens of the 21st century.

On one of the uncovered vault .jpg's there appears to be a water main close to the hood end of the vault. Does anyone know if that's the case? Does anyone know how high the normal water table is there?...sprinklers installed after the fact?

It would have been easy 6 months ago to dig down 2 ft, drill a hole in the top and insert a fiberoptic camera to see if it had water in it.

Then the hole could have been resealed.

This would have saved some people FAR FAR AWAY a lot of time and expense.....

I do hope the baggie held, but have little hope. Going back to 57, it would have been a much better decision to put it in an above ground mausoleum instead of a watery grave...

BTW just who decided to sell tickets to see the unveiling and who reaps the profits?

Would anyone like to buy a ticket? I'm gonna take the cover off my 1958 ski boat after while

Lauren, we could always raise the tax another penny to do it ?!?! It seems that is the rule around here... And yes, people that are reading the archives here would be proud - that s if they will speak english in 50 years... Maybe there will still be a translation engine for the English language. They will be astonished that some of us had freedom of speech, and used it. They will probably find it second nature to see the people bashing people for utilizing that freedom that we have today.

Hard to believe the car was donated, can you imagine them donating a brand new car to be buried, at least I haven't heard of it lately. And the materials, labor, most of it donated. People then were amazing, help came from all over the country, not just around here. All for this time, all for us -- don't waste their faith in us.

Oh well, at least they didn't waste a '57 Chevy on the rust-urrection!

I'm still hoping for the best. It's still vacuum sealed in canvas and plastic. And we really weren't given a whole lot of information regarding the water situation. I checked KOTV website and there is nothing on there about this. Hopefully it isn't near as bad as we think. I'm still excited to see the outcome!

Come on people be real. In the fifties do you actually think the technology back then would have allowed that car to make it 50 years? I think the way they wrapped it and what not was brilliant for that time period. I think the water in it and the years of being in the ground make it all that more interesting to see just what this will look like. I am excited to see this car regardless of the condition it might be in. This is history.

I was in high school living in a smaller town close by when the car was burried. Although it is disappointing that it was not kept dry, just think of all the memories that it has created. As a classic car buff, even though it has some water damage does not mean that this car cannot be restored to its origional look! To me, it is still a miracle to have burried a car and have it gooed enough shape for it to be lifted "whole" from the vault. This is most incouraging and the car will be worth a fortune in the near future!

There are too many depressive postings here! It's only a buried car, done for amusement. Who knew in 1957 that it would become a national event, and how is it that this lucky publicity is cause now for all this naysaying? If anything, it's interesting that the car might be a rustbucket. To answer the last, those vaults are not waterproof, sorry.

The city should have saved the money on this wet car project and spent it on something worth while, like more police officers, I would rather see more officers than an old rusted car be unearthed

Now half the country (and some people in other countries, apparently) will all be watching Tulsa remove a heap of rust and rot from the ground. Great publicity. For once, can't we do something good to attract attention?

Why am I not a bit surprised? I'm glad I wasn't interested in this in the first place. As a previous poster said, this is how things tend to pan out for Tulsa. Next time bury a time capsule let's think more realistically. Keeping a car untouched by the elements underground for 50 years is a bit of a pipe dream. Nobody is going to enjoy the rusty old mess when they get it out of the ground. Everyone will leave the ceremony wanting their money back.

I am curious to see the oucome of the Belvedere. We lived in Tulsa during this time, I don't remember anything about the time capsule but my brother does. I'm anxious to see if everything survived!

Look at the bright side, we now know the interior vinyl and plastics, will be supple and crack-free! There is still time to sneak in the matching Belvedere from the Kansas museum in it's place. Perhaps, somehow mysteriously, the trip from the vault to the exhibit hall will result in an extensive detour!!

Quick! Somebody better get in there before Friday. Just put a big tent around it and replace it with the back-up Belvedere. Nobody'll know the dif.

That is so sad, I was in high school in Tulsa when it was buried and wondered if I would still be around when it was uncovered. Well I am and was hoping all would be well.

A lot of memories associated with those days.

Maybe the planning & execution weren't perfect, but that wasn't the point. Anytime you bury a car, you're wondering what will happen. Just a curiosity, that's all. No dreams involved here!

How appropriate: the effort speaks volumes about Tulsa 50 years ago and still today. Poor planning, poor execution and drowned-out dreams. The more things change, the more they stay the same. I sure am glad they didn't bury anything of real value.

Shades of Geraldo and Al Capone's vault I suppose. As a native Tulsan, I hope all turns out well in the end - the international attention gained from the lead in has been tremendous. It would be a shame if the climax is disappointing.
