Jump's
Beginning in the mid 1940s, folks came from far and wide on Saturday nights to dance to the music of Jim Reeves, Wanda Jackson, Hank Thompson and Conway Twitty, who were among the entertainers who performed at Jump's Roller Rink in Fairfax.
It's a good bet some spent the night at Jump's Roller Inn Motel and dined at Jump's Roller Inn Cafe. They even could have done some wash at Jump's Roller Inn Laundry.
It was all part of a complex (that also included a trucking company) at the north end of Fairfax developed by the late W.L. and Maud Jump. The roller rink closed in 1990, but the motel, laundry and cafe remain.
Daughters Mary Jo and Barbara run the cafe, which still offers hearty meals to its hard-working customers around Fairfax, nestled in the rolling hills of Osage County.
The chicken-fried steak with iron-skillet gravy is practically legendary, and the sizes of the sirloin steaks range from a merely large 16 ounces to an ominous 42 ounces.
