What was your/the band's reaction when told you were picked to showcase
at Dfest?
We were excited. We had a lot of fun playing last year, so we are happy to
come back. We always have fun playing in Tulsa.
Have you showcased at Dfest before? If so, what was it like? If not,
what are looking forward to most during your live set?
Last year we played at Tsunami Sushi and like pretty much everywhere we went
at Dfest, the clubs were at capacity. We also got to fill up on some great
food.
Is there a headlining act that you're going to drop everything to see
(The Roots, Paramore, All-American Rejects, etc.)? If so, which one(s)?
I am excited about The Roots, Ghostland Observatory, and Apples in
Stereo. If I can somehow manage to make it to all three I will be more than
content.
What are 5 indie/unsigned/local bands performing this year that you
would recommend to a complete stranger as "must see"?
Colourmusic, El Paso Hot Button, Callupsie, Ghosts, and Gravity Propulsion
System.
Do you have plans to attend the conference portion of the event? If so,
who are you most wanting to see? If not, why?
I would really like to hear what David Ponak has to say. There are also a
few others that I am hoping to make it to.
Where and when was your band formed, and how?
Derek and Dusty are cousins and have been playing in bands together since
high school. Derek had played with my former band as well. Once that fizzled
out, it felt like the only natural thing to do was to all play together as a
big happy family ... literally. Derek and I are married now.
Are you released/will you release an album this year? If so, what's
the album title, if you've chosen one?
We released "The Great Depression" EP in February of this year and have just
started tearing up our studio to make new renovations and get it ready for
our next project. We hope to be done with the renovations in the next few
weeks and start recording.
How do YOU describe your sound to people who haven't heard your music?
SYNTHCORE! Or at least New Wave-ish lady/man indie rock?
How do YOU describe your live act to people who haven't seen you
perform live?
Imagine a stage covered in synthesizers and those synthesizers are covered
in duct tape. It's a dance party waiting to happen.
What's the most quirky, funny or intolerable aspect of your music?
Our songs have been known to conjure visions of mystical creatures and
roller rinks.
What's the most quirky, funny or intolerable aspect of
your current member lineup?
I challenge any drummer at DFest to match the dry humor and seductive
qualities of Dusty Nelson.
Where is the oddest place that you've found inspiration for a song,
and which song was it?
One of our new songs is about cult leader and Kool-Aid connoisseur Jim
Jones.
What does your band name mean? Or, why do you prefer being a solo
artist?
Our band name comes from the first time I hung out with Derek and Dusty - we
were driving to Norman and listening to Echo and the Bunnymen's "Crocodiles" on the tape deck.
Are you going to be rich and famous because of what you've learned
from, and the opportunity to play at, Dfest? In other words, what are you
expecting to gain from this experience?
We are never expecting to be rich and famous, but we are hoping to take home
a greater knowledge about the music that surrounds us in Oklahoma. It's such
a great opportunity to see so many bands from the area.
Have you attended Dfest before as a music fan? If so, what was the
most fun? If not, what are you most excited about?
We have just been to Dfest the one time but we loved being able to stand
back and watch the insanity. Tulsa becomes totally transformed into a crazy
musical free-for-all.
Will you use the public toilets (port-a-johns)?
As a rule of thumb, I always try to avoid those in ALL situations. I don't
care how clean anyone claims they are, they seriously scare me.
In 10 words or less, describe Dfest for someone who is completely
unfamiliar with the event:
A musical explosion that transforms Tulsa into a whirlwind.
How has the price of gasoline changed how and when you perform and what
gigs you choose to accept?
We had planned on doing some out of state stuff this Summer. Unfortunately
the price of gas has made that really difficult. We have had some great
offers, however, it makes it really hard to get anywhere too far when you
are driving vans that guzzle fuel coupled with sky-high gasoline prices.
