Who is filling out this survey?

Matthew Skelton & Eric Fransen

What was your/the band's reaction when told you were picked to showcase at Dfest?

Pure Jubilation. we felt like all of our hard work over the last year had paid off

Have you showcased at Dfest before? If so, what was it like? If not, what are looking forward to most during your live set?

No

Is there a headlining act that you're going to drop everything to see (The Roots, Paramore, All-American Rejects, etc.)? If so, which one(s)?

The metal head in me is excited to see Helmet, and the hip-hop head in me is looking forward to The Roots

What are 5 indie/unsigned/local bands performing this year that you would recommend to a complete stranger as "must see"?

Galapagos
klondike5
Congress of a Crow
Three Penny Upright
BEN.BEN

Do you have plans to attend the conference portion of the event? If so, who are you most wanting to see? If not, why?

Yes. Taking Care of Business (Band Agreements, Budgets, Marketing, Basics)

Where and when was your band formed, and how?

klondike5 was formed in the spring of 2004 in Tulsa, OK. Originally, klondike5 was strictly a bluegrass family outfit, a pair of brothers and one of the brother's wife. But the early addition of Eric Fransen on the claw hammer banjo quickly tuned us into a real old time string band. Other current members have been picked up along the way via festival pickings and mutual friends.

Are you released/will you release an album this year? If so, what's the album title, if you've chosen one?

we plan on releasing a full length album later this fall, the working title is "From the Mountains of Tulsa"

How do YOU describe your sound to people who haven't heard your music?

Low down gritty string band music from yesteryear, right off of the front porch

How do YOU describe your live act to people who haven't seen you perform live?

Down home goodness, fiddle bows a flying, strings a breakin', fast and furious instrumentals with low down heart felt harmonies, guaranteed to bring out the inner hillbilly in anyone

What's the most quirky, funny or intolerable aspect of your music?

t seems like the majority of traditional bluegrass/old-time songs are about drinking or killing, which is kinda odd considering that bluegrass music is the people's music!

What's the most quirky, funny or intolerable aspect of your current member lineup?

I, Matthew Skelton, can tend to ramble between songs, talking to the audience, telling them about the next song and the history of it and what not.

Where is the oddest place that you've found inspiration for a song, and which song was it?

Matthew Skelton once wrote a song while mowing my front yard. The song is called "Paying my dues, just not to you" Carmen Skelton wrote a song while pickin’ vines out of a fence row, it is called "He's Gone" Eric Fransen once wrote a song on a piece of wood while driving through the mountains of NW Arkansas it is titled "Cruel Wind". and you thought driving and talking on a cell phone was bad!

What does your band name mean? Or, why do you prefer being a solo artist?

klondike5 is a fictional telephone exchange number used on old TV shows. instead of saying "555-1234" they would say "Operator connect me to klondike5-1234"

Are you going to be rich and famous because of what you've learned from, and the opportunity to play at, Dfest? In other words, what are you expecting to gain from this experience?

Rich and famous, of course not. We are, however, expecting to gain knowledge of how to promote our band and learn how to plan and execute a tour.

Have you attended Dfest before as a music fan? If so, what was the most fun? If not, what are you most excited about?

Flaming Lips! by far

Will you use the public toilets (port-a-johns)?

Yes. All members of klondike5 are avid festival goers, so we are all very well versed in port-a-john etiquette. To know when to hover and when it is OK to sit, and when a port-a-john is a lost cause

In 10 words or less, describe Dfest for someone who is completely unfamiliar with the event:

To be emerged in music for more than one day is a growing experience.

How has the price of gasoline changed how and when you perform and what gigs you choose to accept?

We either have to charge more money or take home less money.
