How do you think the city should finance the estimated $1.6 billion in street improvements necessary to bring them to an average grade?
The condition of our streets is deplorable. I have read the committee report and Councilor Martinson's presentation of how we got in this mess. I support the Oklahoma Municipal League initiative to redirect one half of State sales tax to municipal governments for street repairs. The Council has been studying funding options for several months and I will support any proposal offered by those who have studied the problem in depth.
What do you think the city should do to further development along the Arkansas River and how should it be funded?
I support river development. River development is not the primary responsibility of city government. We must provide and maintain the infrastructure and public safety to the taxpayers. I believe the City can create an environment favorable to private investments to assist them to develop the river corridor that will benefit the entire region. The taxpayers of Tulsa County already approved $9.5 million for Arkansas River projects as part of Vision 2025. The funds are just now being spent for design, engineering etc. for the three low water dams in Sand Springs, Jenks and Tulsa. It is my understanding that this pre-construction work, which includes permitting, is due to be completed by December 2010. In November, Congress authorized $50 million for Arkansas River development projects. We need to get the federal funds appropriated, the environmental and preconstruct ion projects completed before the City of Tulsa makes a decision on its role in river development.
Would you support/not support public financial assistance to further downtown commercial development that could include a baseball stadium for the Drillers team? Please explain your position.
I would like to see the Tulsa Drillers in a downtown venue and would support public financial assistance to further downtown commercial development on a case-by-case basis. More importantly I will work with the Council and the Mayors office to create an environment where downtown development and redevelopment is achieved through private sector investments.
What would be three goals you would like to accomplish if you are elected?
1. I will work to implement a comprehensive long-term street maintenance and repair policy.
2. I understand the frustrations facing homeowners within the City of Tulsa and will diligently work to overhaul the current code enforcement policies and work fervently with traffic engineering to reduce commuter traffic on residential streets.
3. I will work tirelessly with community leaders and the Tulsa Police Department to put an end to vandalism and vagrancy in District 4.
What do you see as personal strengths that you would bring to the position?
I have been actively involved in neighborhood associations within District 4 for over 10 years. As a successful small business owner I understand the wants and needs of my neighbors in District 4 and possess the skills and knowledge to negotiate solutions for the complex issues facing the City and District 4.
