How do you think the city should finance the estimated $1.6 billion in street improvements necessary to bring them to an average grade?
The city government must adjust its priorities and stop the waste and tax-and-spend policies that have put us in debt and allowed our infrastructure to deteriorate so badly. We must concentrate on street and bridge repair before we spend money on sports and entertainment venues. High standards of lasting street repair must be maintained and there should be repercussions if the repairs do not last. Tax funds allocated for street maintenance should be used for that purpose alone. The city should tighten its belt and avoid further massive debt.
What do you think the city should do to further development along the Arkansas River and how should it be funded?
Any further development along the Arkansas River should be delayed until we get our house in order, both financially and in state of repair and maintenance of infrastructure. Development along the river should be made attractive and convenient to private industry by means of adjusting zoning, tax rates and rebates and other incentives. I think Tulsa should be returned to financial stability and should fiscal policies before we try any further schemes dealing with sports or recreation. What has been happening is like blowing the house payment on a new car.
Would you support/not support public financial assistance to further downtown commercial development that could include a baseball stadium for the Drillers team? Please explain your position.
I will not support the use of public funds to subsidize sports, entertainment or recreational facilities, even though I'm a professional entertainer and might benefit from such use. Let the free market sort these things out. If people do not want them enough to pay for them, I don't agree with forcing them to pay for them via taxation. The best way to revitalize the downtown area is to reverse the failed policies that killed the area in the past.
What would be three goals you would like to accomplish if you are elected?
(1) I would like to see Tulsa's city government behave responsibly. I want to see us pay our bills, refrain from further debt, take care of our streets and bridges and water and sewer facilities, support our Police Department and get officers on the street to enforce the traffic laws. (2) I want to see frivolous, intrusive and unnecessary ordinances and laws removed from the city codes and the citizens of Tulsa treated with respect. (3) I want to see Tulsa's remarkable, internationally-admired musicians recognized as an asset so they can become a resource for promoting the city. I would like to see a monthly television broadcast coming from Tulsa, like Nashville Skyline or Austin City Limits, but I would not support the use of public funds for this.
What do you see as personal strengths that you would bring to the position?
I first move into the District in 1940 and, as a result, I understand the issues associated with the area. I have taken the time to study the United States Constitution and the Oklahoma State Constitution and my highest priority is to respect the rights of citizens. I taught myself to play piano and guitar and began playing professionally in Tulsa in 1957. I still play locally and internationally. Playing live for very large crowds has developed my self-confidence. Ay my age and position in life, I have no political ambitions, nor need for celebrity, so I can keep my priorities straight and serve the needs of the city rather than any personal agenda.
