Candidate views:
Why are you seeking this position? As a parent, a TPS graduate and native Tulsan, I feel it is my responsibility to provide proven leadership to what is one of the most important boards in the City. I hope to bring a business perspective to the school board utilizing practical problem solving experience. I believe strong public schools are critical to Tulsa's future success and growth.
What do you believe are the chief responsibilities of a school board member? Establish a bold vision and strategic plan that the Superintendent and staff are charged with implementing based on meaningful input from customers (students, parents, teachers, etc.).
How much time would you plan to spend in the schools in your voting district on a weekly basis? As needed, time will fluctuate based on the school year and types of meetings and events.
What should the relationship of the school board be to the superintendent? Provide policy oversight and hold the system accountable regarding fiscal and student achievement policies as well as represent the parents and schools of the district and the entire system.
What are the greatest strengths of the school district? The greatest strengths are the dedicated parents, great teachers and support staff, and the school choices that are available.
What are the greatest weaknesses of the school district? The greatest weaknesses are a lack of communication with parents and the community, schools with a history of low performance, and the number of students that do not complete high school.
What changes and/or new initiatives, if any, would you like to see in Tulsa Public Schools? We need to improve public confidence by making sure we share the success stories happening at TPS through stronger communication. There also needs to be a stronger focus on integrating technology into the classroom as well as a web-based system for parents to check on their child's daily progress. TPS also needs to be more aggressive in modernizing aging buildings and infrastructure.
