1. What are the top three issues in your district?
Education – we must decrease the high school dropout rate. Oklahoma needs both more college graduates and more skilled workers. Infrastructure – good roads and highways are a cornerstone of economic development and tourism. Health care – Due to alack of affordable insurance, too many Oklahomans are just one serious illness away from bankruptcy.
2. Lawmakers approved a stand-still budget for the coming fiscal year. Critics blamed previous tax cuts for a drop in revenues, while tax cut supporters say such cuts spur the economy. Do you believe Oklahoma can sustain additional tax cuts?
We should not lower taxes until we see the full effect of prior cuts and what the economy does in the next year. Oklahoma’s tax burden is quite low in comparison to most states. We need to do a better job of getting that information out to use as a recruiting tool for business and retirees.
3. Do you think illegal immigration is a serious problem facing Oklahoma? Why or why not?
A problem but not a serious problem. HB 1804 has been effective. We need to make it a little easier/more efficient for hard-working, honest immigrants to obtain some form of legal status where they can work, pay taxes and contribute to society.
4. Do you believe voters should be required to produce identification at the polls?
Yes. You have to have an ID to drive, cash a check, use a credit card, buy alcohol or tobacco, rent a car, check into a hotel etc. I do not see having to have an ID at the polls a barrier to access.
5. Should the governor be taken out of the parole process?
Yes (except for murder rape and other serious life-threatening crimes.)
