Registered voter? Yes
Previously sought or held elected office and if so, when and what office? Yes, current president of the Liberty Board of EducationHighest level of education, name of institution, and year graduated: Bachelor's degree in agricultural economics, Oklahoma State University, 1986
Why are you seeking this position? I have been involved with Liberty Public Schools my entire life. I love this school and the way things are done here. My great-grandfather served on this same board for 27 years, and I filled seat 3, 10 years ago that was held by my uncle for 20 years, Robert F. Kirk Jr. We have a great education system at Liberty and an excellent staff and the best teachers to be found. I am proud to give a little back to this school, because the school gave me so much when I attended. My parents also attended the school their entire lives.
What do you believe are the chief responsibilities of a school board member? The chief responsibility of a school board member is to make sure the superintendent is carrying out the policies that are and have been instituted by the State of Oklahoma and adopted by the board.
How much time would you plan to spend in the schools in your voting district on a weekly basis? I am there every time I am needed for whatever time it takes. Sometimes it's 10 minutes, sometimes it's all day.
What should the relationship of the school board be to the superintendent? We keep in touch sometimes as much as daily, but for the most part every couple of weeks and at least once a month. We as a board hired him to do his job, that is what he is trained to do (or she ). We are not educators, they are. The EOI tests tell the story. If those numbers are headed south, then we have a problem.
What are the greatest strengths of the school district? Our greatest strength is are people in this community. We are a small school, and we are very proud of that. We have many 3rd and 4th generations attending school there and even some 5th generations. That by itself says a lot for what we do. We have a small school atmosphere that attracts some of the best teachers to our school, and they stay here.
What are the greatest weaknesses of the school district? Our greatest weakness is lack of funds needed to do all that we want to do. We have to do a balancing act and try to treat all activities and programs as equal as we can. We just don't have the funding to do all we would like to be able to do. We are making a steady progression towards our goals as the funds arrive. We are fully bonded and have been since I have been on the board. We are growing, building and moving as fast as our money lets us.
What changes and/or new initiatives, if any, would you like to see in the district? I can't say I would change a thing.
Please include any other comments or concerns you have about the school district here: I would like to quote our past Superintendent Mr. David Martin, "Liberty is Tulsa County's best kept secret." I am also proud that we have three ordained ministers on our staff including our, Superintendent Dr. Kent Holbrook. Dr. Holbrook is a fantastic leader in every way and we are certainly happy to have him here at Liberty running our school system.
