Tulsa World photojournalist Mike Simons graduated from Union High School and received a bachelor's degree in journalism/photographic arts from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1995. He worked at the Tulsa World from 1995-2000. During that time he was named Photographer of the Year by the Oklahoma Press Association, and received the Sweepstakes Award for photography by the Associated Press twice.
In 2000, he became a freelance photojournalist based out of Cincinnati and worked for many national and international publications, but in 2005 -- after fighting homesickness for more than 5 years -- he returned to Oklahoma and the Tulsa World. His passion is storytelling, and he is constantly amazed at the power of the still photograph.
