am Bradford, a soft-spoken 21-year-old Putnam City North High School graduate, is leading the University of Oklahoma to the BCS National Championship on Jan. 8 at Dolphin Stadium. He’s also the Heisman Trophy winner.
That’s quite a leap in a short time for Bradford. Flash back to as recently as April 2007, when OU coach Bob Stoops wasn’t sure who would quarterback the Sooners. Bradford and two other candidates were listed as neck-and-neck for the starting job.
Now, Bradford’s jaw-dropping statistics, startling efficiency, as well as OU’s 12-1 record and string of 60-point-plus games, have pushed Bradford into the national spotlight and into the running for college football’s most prestigious award.
Not bad for a guy who, after joining the team in 2005, said, “I really never thought of anything like this when I was growing up. I always dreamed about it, but … I'm starting to realize how lucky I am that I have an opportunity to go to the University of Oklahoma to play football. Not many guys can say that. I think it's starting to sink in.” |
