Since 1993, the Tulsa World has raised more than $5 million for needy families in the Tulsa area.

The drive is a fundraiser for the Tulsa Area Salvation Army to help it provide holiday assistance and more.

“It’s such a great program because it gives us a little more leeway to help outside the box, ” said Major Roy Williams, Tulsa area Salvation Army commander. The agency has a set limit it distributes for rent and utility payments. This allows them to help a family out in a bigger way. “If they have a special need like getting their car fixed so they don’t lose their job, we can do that. It ’s a great program for us.”

The families selected for the program are chosen during the Christmas assistance sign up period.

This year's goal is $300,000. Read more
