The following resources are available through the Tulsa World's Newspaper
in Education department for teachers interested in using the Tulsa
World in their classrooms.
All of our guides are written by experienced educators or industry
experts and offer activities to stimulate dialogue and discussion.
Suggested grade levels are provided, but teachers are encouraged to
adapt all materials to their grade levels.
The Tulsa World NIE department is continuously adding to our library

developed to be used with newspapers in the classroom. Therefore,
they are not available for purchase but are offered free with classroom

Stock Market Basics: A Guide for Educators and Beginning Investors
- a teacher's primer on how the stock market works and tips how to teach
your students the ins and outs of the stock market.
A Closer Look at Newspaper Advertising - students learn to
recognize advertising messages and readily distinguish them from other
messages they receive. Activities help students analyze, evaluate, examine,
work cooperatively and construct.
Celebrate Theatre! - addresses the role of newspapers and theaters
as vital institutions of local communities. Activities encourage students
to use the newspaper to answer questions about 22 new or revival plays.
Detailed lesson plans are included for "Cats," "Les Miserables"
and "Jelly's Last Jam."
Creating a Classroom Newspaper - basic newspaper writing activities
are student-directed with easy to follow lesson plans. Good for language
arts and basic journalism classes.
Drawing Conclusions About the 90s - exposure to and mastery
of the thought processes of newspaper editorial cartoons will not only
awaken an awareness and interest in current events, but also will sharpen
critical thinking skills. Each lesson in this guide covers two pages.
The first page offers a cartoon and an objective; the second page offers
points for discussion.
Math News - activities in this guide use the newspaper as a
resource for teaching: problem solving, communication, logical reasoning
and making connections. This guide was developed based on the national
standards for teachers of mathematics.
McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigational System: Lesson Plans
and Background Material - includes a historical perspective on the waterway
system, lesson plans on teaching about waterway transportation and an
appendix filled with resource information on the McClellan-Kerr. Developed

of and issues related to media literacy: understanding media messages
by accessing, analyzing, evaluating and communicating media messages.
101 Ways to Use The Mini Page - offers activities to enhance
classroom use of The Mini Page, a full-page of information and games
for kids found each Monday in the Tulsa World.
Talking About Freedom: A Teacher's Guide to the First Amendment
- series of educational print ads for teens, ranging from dress
codes to censorship of school newspapers, making the First Amendment
relevant to young people. Could complete a unit on the Constitution
and Bill of Rights.
What's News? - Deadline, Online, Byline - contains key points
about the different sections and departments of the newspaper. Activities
directly relate to the newspaper and many are reproducible. Provides
many additional resources.
