Lincoln Essay Contest with the Oklahoma Humanities Council
This contest hopes to engage students with the “basic, democratic ideals as they study
one of the most important leaders in the history of our country, Abraham Lincoln.” The
contest has entries for different grade levels, including a drawing contest for younger
children. The topic is: Why should Oklahomans celebrate the bicentennial of Abraham
Lincoln's birth? The deadline is February 12, 2009. Visit their site for more

Gettysburg Address Simultaneous Reading
A simultaneous reading of the Gettysburg Address by school children will take place on
Lincoln’s 200th birthday, February 12, 2009. The live reading will start at 9:30 a.m. from
the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois. There is
an attempt to break the Guinness World Record of the most people reading
simultaneously. It will be carried on a live web cast. For more information visit

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency is accepting letters and cards that tell why
Lincoln “matters and what his legacy means today.” One card will be chosen for a time
capsule that will be opened in the year 2109. Send all letters and cards to:

National Teach-In
On February 12, 2009, grades 6-12 can join a live web cast that will join students across
the country “in an exploration of Lincoln’s thoughts, ideals and legacy.” In this
interactive presentation, students will “explore what made Abraham Lincoln the man he

My Hero Essay and Art Contest
Students can submit essays about a “hero in their life” that has the qualities of Lincoln.
Winners will receive a trip to Chicago and Springfield for the Summer Lincoln
