What is NIE? Through the pages of their daily newspaper, thousands of young people are discovering how the basics relate to real life. It's an old idea -- the value of which was realized more than 200 years ago. But the idea has grown into a partnership between newspapers and schools called Newspaper in Education. NIE at the Tulsa World took root in the 1970s. Today, the program continues to provide educational resources to teachers in Tulsa and communities across northeastern Oklahoma who choose to enhance their curriculum with the daily newspaper. Another goal of NIE is to provide exciting activities in the newspaper itself to draw in young readers. The innovative educational uses for the newspaper are endless. The Tulsa World is used in more than 30 subject areas in classrooms from kindergarten to college. And each year hundreds of teachers attend NIE workshops to learn new applications. More than a dozen teacher guides are available from the Tulsa World's NIE department on using the newspaper in math, language arts, science, social studies and fine arts. And each semester the World publishes several student educational sections that are delivered at no additional cost with classroom copies of the newspaper. The newspaper/school NIE relationship benefits students through sharper thinking skills, motivation to learn based on material relevant to their lives, preparation for active citizenship in a democracy and better reading skills. NIE benefits the newspaper through increased literacy skills and long-term readership. Studies show that the most avid newspaper readers began reading the newspaper and using it as a resource early in life. To participate in the Tulsa World NIE program, schools must order a minimum of 25 newspapers for the classroom during the school week. The cost of each classroom newspaper is 14 cents. All teacher resources and educational supplements are provided at no cost to participants in the NIE program.
