The Tulsa-based Square 1 Theatrics, which earned a Tony Award for co-producing the revival of “Pippin” in 2013, will co-produce the upcoming Broadway production of “Waitress,” a new musical written by Grammy-nominee Sara Bareilles.
“Waitress” will begin preview performances March 26 at the Brooks Atkinson Theater in New York, with an official opening set for April 24.
Square 1 Theatrics, founded by Jay Krottinger and Ryan Tanner in 2012, won the Tony Award for best revival for “Pippin,” which re-imagined Stephen Schwartz’s musical fable into a Cirque du Soleil-style extravaganza.
The company also co-produced the London production of “Memphis,” which earned two Olivier Awards, and the stage adaptation of John Grisham’s novel “A Time to Kill.” The company is also co-producing the forthcoming film “A Very Sordid Wedding,” starring Leslie Jordan and Whoopi Goldberg.
“Waitress” is based on the film of the same name written and directed by Adrienne Shelly.
The musical features Broadway’s first all-female creative team. Bareilles, whose albums include “Little Voice” and “Kaleidoscope Heart,” wrote the music and lyrics. Jesse Nelson wrote the book. Lorin Latarro choreographed the production. Diana Paulus, who earned a Tony Award for directing “Pippin,” is the show’s director.
Jesse Mueller, who won a Tony Award for portraying singer-songwriter Carol King in the musical “Beautiful,” stars as Jenna, a waitress trapped in an abusive marriage who seeks a way to a better life.
The musical also stars Eric Anderson, Nick Cordero, Drew Gehling, Kimiko Glenn, Keala Settle and Dakin Matthews.
