TULSA CHILDREN'S SUMMER THEATRE CAMP has continued to grow in popularity with the largest number of children participating this summer since it was established in 2014. The two-week camps, sponsored by Tulsa Community College Departments of Theatre and Music, offer local children the opportunities to learn the basics of improvisational comedy and musical theatre. At the end of the two-week camp, the kids get the chance to perform what they’ve learned for their friends and family. In the past six years, the camp has produced junior versions of well-known titles such as “A Year with Frog and Toad,” “Schoolhouse Rock,” Disney’s “Aristocats,” and “Winnie the Pooh."
“This is such a valuable educational program for kids at a low cost to families,” says coordinator and director, Mark Frank. “With more than 70 seventy students enrolled, this is our biggest camp to date and I couldn’t be more excited!”
The Intro to Improvisation camp teaches basic improv and short-form theatre games. “Improvisation helps our campers build trust, unity, and communication as an ensemble. It is wonderful to see their grown as they build to performing for friends and family and taking audience suggestions,” says Bethanie Frank, TCC professor and director of the improv comedy troupe The Rubber Chicken Factory. “We’re calling our improv campers ‘Chicken Littles!’”
The Broadway Revival camp, led by Laura Cowan and Mark Frank, teaches students acting, singing, and dancing. The camp also explores what every actor needs to know while performing in a musical production, including character development and basic theatre knowledge. The students enrolled in the Broadway Revival camp will be cast and perform in the 30-minute musical production of the classic animated film, Disney’s “101 Dalmatians Kids.”
“Getting children to explore and experience improv, music, and theatre builds confidence in themselves and I believe it is so important at a young age. The arts have proven to help students succeed in the classroom,” says Mark Frank.
Performances of The Rubber Chicken Factory & Disney’s “101 Dalmatians Kids” are 7 p.m., June 14 and 15 at the VanTrease Performing Arts Center on the TCC Southeast Campus located at 10300 E. 81st St.
