Connor Beichler plans to travel down to Norman this weekend to begin the next chapter of his baseball career.
The recent Owasso graduate and OU signee now has a decision to make.
Beichler was drafted by the San Francisco Giants organization in the 27th round of the Major League Baseball Draft earlier this week.
“We really don’t know,” Beichler said of his future plans. “I’m still just talking with the family.”
The Ram shortstop collected a .313 batting average and led the team in runs scored (45), stolen bases (24) and triples (six) from the leadoff spot this spring.
Drafted on Wednesday, Beichler said he learned of the news from a Giants’ regional scout as he was pulling up to his house.
“I was just really happy,” Beichler said. “It’s like a lifelong dream.”
Beichler, one of six high school players from the state taken in the draft, said his decision to sign with the Giants’ organization or play college ball at OU does not need to be made until Aug. 1. He anticipates making the decision sooner, however.
Beichler recently played in the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association All-State Games in Enid. A member of the Large East squad, Beichler scored his team’s lone run in a 2-1 loss to the Large West team.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Beichler, who had a double in the game. “I knew a lot of those guys.”
Ram teammate and pitcher David Sandlin was also selected for the team.
